1. The DescentFilm Trailer Analysis
When shown the trailer, the trailer seems to be introducing us to the girls and what
they are doing. At first the cave seems warm and welcoming with glowing light being
lit upon it when the girls are exploring it. This then changes, as Sarah seems to be
seeing things when the girls seemto be trapped in this dark and desolate cave. With
this there happens to be dialogue explaining what’s happens to someone when
trapped in the cave. The use of dialogue kind of unravels what the girls suffer when
trapped in the cave. The sort of things they suffer is: fear, disorientation,
hallucination, and claustrophobia. This sort of dialogue happens when scenes of
mysterious creatures seemto be following the girls while Sarah claiming the things
she saw was real and its not her mind playing tricks on her. This then quickly changes
into a fast pace sequence where a lot of blood and gore seems to be shown to the
audience…
The trailer does well to entice its audience with its bloody/gory graphic content. One
of the scenes that are shown with excessive blood and gore is where Sarah (who we
wont know if we haven’t watched the movie and only seen the trailer) seems to be
attacking an unknown figure in a blood pit. With this, it entices the audience, as we
are curious to know who Sarah seems to be fighting and how she ended up in this
pit. To move onto other aspects of the trailer there seems to be a lot of movement
and action. This is shown when the girls seemto be attacking this unknown figure to
them rushing to escape the monsters that are out to get them. Beside this there is
intense non-diegetic music playing in the background. As each scene that is being
shown in the trailer seemto be more intense it seems the music builds up to. This is
effective as it builds tension beside the fact that the non-diegetic music that is being
played is a heartbeat.
In how the trailer displays the movie in overall it displays it as a monster/survival film
and a film being mainly focused around girls. The trailer depicts these girls trying to
survive against these monsters that are out towards them. From what we can see
the girls seemto be desperately trying to escape the cave alive and it’s a battle
between the survival of the fittest. There’s a lot of horror that occurs and scenes of
suspense where we see the girls that are being separated.

2. The first descent poster was originally the image where light is being shown
upon Sarah’s face. From what we can see it seems that Sarah is the one that will
be the last to survive due to light being shown upon her face. This is also evident
of the fact that all the other girls will die in the cave. The poster promotes the
movie with a saying from total film quoting the movie as being “outright
terror…bold and brilliant”. From this, this promotes the movie as being different
and a really good horror film. Beside this with a quote from a person/article that
has reviewed the film this is an effort to promote viewers to watch the film due
to a good review of the film. However with efforts of the film promoting the film
through billboards, websites etc. there had been campaign changes towards the
film original poster due to the fact that the poster was shown in the 7/7 bus that
had been bombed. The film is about the terror the girls face when underground
in a cave and the fact that there was a bombing near the London underground
caused too much of a coincidental controversial uproar. So within a pass of time
a new poster was created:
This poster was used to promote the film in the descent website. From this,
cinema tickets costs (around 2005) were only £5 or less and with the descent
having its own website this will help boost the sales of people buying tickets to
watch the descent in cinemas.
The descent website has a variety of options that viewers can access such as:
message boards, DVD sales, downloads of the movie, a trailer you can watch that
advertises the descent and a synopsis of the movie. Moreover, there is also the
casting of the people in the descent so viewers can know what actors are starring
in this horror and an experience of all different types of feelings that are
expressed in the movie such as Fear, claustrophobia, hallucinations etc. Beside
this, in the website they are sections that move which makes it very attractive for
the viewers to see and play around with and adds to the overall look of the
website.
