Tyler DeWitt gave a speech called "Hey science teachers – make it fun!" about making science more engaging and understandable for high school students. He discussed his experience as a new teacher finding that even good students disliked their textbook because it was full of complex terms. Tyler kept his audience interested by varying his tone and showing passion for helping students truly understand science rather than just memorizing it. He advocated making science fun and interactive to better prepare students for after high school.
1. I chose the speaker Tyler DeWitt and his speech was
called “Hey science teachers – make it fun!”
2. His speech is about trying to teach high school
students science in a way that they can understand
the topics, rather than drowning them in boring
science terms that they just don’t get.
3. He caught my attention right
away when he started off
saying “It was my first year as
a new high school science
teacher.” Just saying that tells
me this is going to be
interesting
4. He then goes on
by saying that his
students, even his
best student
hated the reading
because she
couldn’t
understand it. This
kept me
interested
because I was the
same way, I loved
science, but the
textbook was
complete
gibberish to me as
well.
5. He maintained engagement with his audience varying his pitches
and tones as well as showing high enthusiasm for what he was
talking about. He made it fun and interesting to listen to.
6. Tyler was a very
interesting speaker. Just
they way he spoke kept it
interesting and I wanted
to listen to more that he
had to say.
7. I found that Tyler followed
Commandment III to the nose.
“Thou shalt reveal thy curiosity and
thy passion.” Just they way he speaks
you can tell he has passion to teach
his students so they understand.
8. I give him a 5/5 on the dynamism scale
because he was full of energy through his
entire speech. I could feel his liveliness he
was showing the audience
9. Garr Reynolds tip “Show
your passion” has to be
the definition of Tyler’s
speech. He really
showed his passion on
teaching children and
getting them to actually
understand science, not
just memorize it or give
up on it.
10. Tyler’s speech compares to
Ken Robinson’s “Schools Kill
Creativity” speech by the way
they both talk about how
children learn in schools and
not everyone learns the
same.
11. Ken’s was more focused on
the creativity side of
learning while Tyler was
focused on just getting the
student to understand the
material.
12. Between Tyler’s speech and Ken Robinson’s “Changing
Education Paradigms”, both are trying to better prepare
children for after high school and keep them engaged while in
school.
13. Tyler’s was more narrowed in on changing the way we teach
difficult science terms while Ken was talking about the school
system as a whole.
14. A few tips I can give
my classmates are
to:
Keep it lively. If
you can show that
you have passion
for what you are
presenting, then
your audience will
understand you
better and be more
involved with what
you have to say.
15. Use your arms and hands
in your presentation. Don’t
look like a statue, the more
energetic you are, the
more you audience will be
too.
16. Talk about something you want to talk about. You will be
more comfortable talking about something you know and
want others to know about too.
