5. Teaching Philosophy In writing my teaching philosophy, I thought about what I would like to accomplish as a teacher in my class. Among the first things were the expected, yet highly desired outcomes; A warm, nurturing and safe learning environment, an atmosphere that lends itself to free cooperative thinking, and a milieu of creativity through social interaction. However, my initial goal in the classroom is to establish a place that an individual student can earn, show and receive respect. Every student can learn and has a right to learn in a open and accepting environment. I hope to provide that type of atmosphere for my students in providing continued open communication with them and their parents as part of a team. Among the many aspects of teaching that I enjoy the most is the opportunity to be creative and express my love of English to my students. To accomplish this, I draw on various fresh approaches to learning. I like using creative dramatic techniques like having the students wear homemade white sheet Togas over their clothes and eat grapes while sitting on the grass as they take turns reading Julius Caesar by William Shakespeare . Or, to build interest in a unit study on The Scarlet Letter , I could surprise the student and come in wearing an old brown robe, a hood covering my head and a large letter “A” sewed on the front of the robe. Then, I would darken the classroom and begin reading by candlelight or lantern. After reading for a while myself, I would hand it over to the students to continue the reading activity. With my background being in film, television and radio production, I love to use multi-media in many of my assignments. For example, to help build the students interest in classic Greek Mythology, I could use small clips (adhering to copyright laws and school guidelines) from current movies that are popular with the students like the motion picture Eragon or the CW’s Smallville. Then, lead the class in a discussion of any similarities and differences that classical Greek Mythology may have to modern day Mythology. Then, they could break up into small cooperative groups to allow students the opportunity to use their individual learning styles as they discuss and construct an outline for writing their own myth, later to be presented to the class. I believe that as a teacher, it is important to present students with various modes of learning and help them as individuals to obtain a life-long love of learning. I myself also need to be persistent in my own growth in learning. In order to enhance and continue my knowledge of English, I find it essential to attend Continued Educational classes in my field and sharing that learned knowledge with my students.

6. Classroom Procedures At the beginning of class: Say good morning Miss Ketner as you enter the room. (This way I can get to know your names also). Be completely seated and quiet by the time the bell rings. Have completed homework ready on your desk to discuss or turn in. Look at board to see if there are any instructions listed. During class: Sharpen your pencil when necessary. You do not need permission. Save trash until after class. Bathroom/water/nurse/locker policy: Bathroom visits are at your discretion, but need to be communicated to the teacher. Don’t abuse this privilege. Anyone who consistently asks to leave will need to schedule an individual conference with the teacher. No one will be excused during the first or last 10 minutes of class or during certain activities. Otherwise, please do not ask to leave the classroom unless it is an emergency. You will not be allowed to go to your locker once class has begun. During assembly days please line up and walk down the hall quietly with your class as a group. Sit together as a group and return to class as a group. At the end of class: Pack up your belongings only after you have been asked to do so. Clean the area around your desk before you leave

8. Philosophy of Discipline M - Model your expectations. O - Optimistic and open with students. T - Train students to think for themselves. H - Help students and be honest with students E - Enthusiasm - show it! R - Respect for students and have realistic reasons for discipline.

9. Philosophy of Discipline, Continued. Why is my Discipline Philosophy based on the words MOTHER ? For the last 14 years, I have been the Mother of three children. Two of them have now graduated from High School and youngest, Emily will be in third grade this year. I home schooled Emily for Kindergarten and First Grade. She then returned to public school for second grade. Upon entering, Emily was on grade level in all subjects. She finished the year on grade level receiving A’s in Reading, Comp/Grammar, Spelling and Math and received all “E’s” for Excellent in the non-graded areas of Science, Social Studies, Penmanship, Art, Music, Physical Education and Health. I believe working with her the last few years at home and teaching her to be a self-learner has increased her chances for success in the public domain. Now, with all of this experience in mind, I look forward to guiding my new students and leading them to be self-learners. I believer the most important time in the school year to communicate expectations with your student is the first week. This is where educational modeling is of utmost importance. The first week, I will spend the majority of class time going over my classroom procedures and also the school policies with my students. I will also model those procedures and policies throughout the school day whether I am in the lunchroom, hallway or parking lot. I also choose to be open and optimistic with my students. I want to show them that although a classroom does need to follow a variety of policies and procedures we can all, as a family, be truly excited about learning. I also look forward to what I will be able to learn from my students! One of my main goals is to start out the year letting my students know where I stand in regards to my classroom policies, making for hopefully, a much better year. But, as I mentioned in my first paragraph about teaching my daughter to be a self-learner, I would like to help my students be self-learners and be able to think for themselves . In helping my students to think for themselves, I will be honest and sincere with them. I believe in treating students as individual learners and as part of a cooperative learning community and family. Also, showing your enthusiasm about learning to your students causes them to be enthusiastic also. One can’t help want to learn in an environment that is positive and exciting. Students who are actively involved in the learning process retain more knowledge. Lastly, in being a mother to my children at home, it is important to show them respect as individuals and hand out consequences consistently and fairly. The same is true in disciplining a classroom full of individuals. It is absolutely essential to show respect for all students equally and provide to students consistent, realistic and fair consequences. This is why my Discipline Philosophy is based on the words MOTHER .

10. Classroom Management Example of Transition Procedures Please be completely in your seat when the bell rings. Please use restroom before class. If an emergency, talk with me personally during group time. Please do not get up to sharpen your pencil when I am talking.
