2. Outline
• Introduction : what is light ?
• history of light : newton,christian
huygen,Einestin
• Activity 1: lights and their spectra
• Activity 2: observing diffraction
• Activity 3: observing interference
• Activity 4: observing iridescence
• Design Project:fabricating photonics crystals
• Product Idea :the light trash sorter
3. Introduction
What is light ?
Light is electromagnetic radiation within a certain
portion of the electromagnetic spectrum. The word
usually refers to visible light, which is visible to the
human eye and is responsible for the sense of
sight.Visible light is usually defined as having
wavelengths in the range of 400–700 nanometres
(nm).
4. • The nature of light and its behavior was studied by several
scientists, such as Isaac Newton, Christiaan Huygens, Thomas
Young and Einestin…etc. However, Einstein discovered that
light has wave-particle duality and won nobel prize.
Introduction
history of light
5. • Objective: use a compact disc spectroscope to explore the component colors, or spectra,of light emitted from
various common sources.
• Procedure:using tape the cd top was removed
• and then with the cardboard tube we draw a circle in the cd and the black paper and we did cut a small line in the
center of the black paper
• the paper was taped in the same place were the cd lines is
• we did use this spectroscope to see different types of spectra like : black light , led light , sunlight , Incandescent
light source
Activity 1
lights and their spectra
Light source spectrum colors
led Intermittent light Red,purple,
blue,yellow
Incandescent light source Continuous light Red,blue, purple
Yellow,green
sunlight Continuous light Red,green
,blue
Black light Continuous and Intermittent light Green, blue
6. Activity 2
observing diffraction
• can the water waves turn around the obstacles and avoid them ?
• produce:
• the plastic box was filled with water .
• the small cubes of woods were placed in the water box and the was a small place
between them
• and we took the wooden stick and we moved it gently .
• and the waves avoid the obstacle and pass beside it.
7. Activity 3
• observing interference part (A)
interference we did two experiment about it the first one: was
making interference transparent .
we found that the white color is constructive interference . black
color is distractive when the two waves interfere each other.
standing waves was the second experiment the antinode is the thick
part and that mean when the Destructive and constructive pat was
in there way
node is the place that the waves meet in.
8. Activity 4
observing iridescence
we wanted to observe how iridescence happens so we tried the
observing peacock feather witch are known for their iridescence
property.
conclusion : we learned that iridescence is the property of certain
surfaces that appear the different colors as the angle from the view.
9. Design Project
• fabricating photonics crystals
• the solution was polystyrene and it was crushed into : 250 nm
and the other solution is crushed into 300nm
• we used the eye dropper to put the solution we did put two
drops from the 250 nm and 300 nm solution
• we let it rest on the hot plate for 15 min and we saw an
amazing result : the 250 nm had turn to pink while 300nm
turned into a solution between green and blue
10. Introduction
Recycling is the process of converting waste into reusable materials
and objects. and we did a new way to sort the waste so it could be
recycled easily , this days the trash is a main problem in the whole
world, and in our country we burn trash and a big amount of co2
and toxic gases will rise in the air and that will effect the ozone
shield and all the living creatures, this project will help the Qatari
Society to recycle in a easier way.
we used technology and light to build our project and we used solar
cells to make it eco-friendly.
11. objectives
our main goal is to save our the world from dying and destroyed
by co2 and toxic gases that comes from burning trash. and by the
big amount of plastic and glasses and other materials that takes
time to get decomposed. and to sort the waste to boxes by light
passed by the polystyrene that will be stamped in the materials
from the factories. and we will give the right companies to recycle
them.
12. the light trash sorter
the sorter will work by using light to pass by the polystyrene stamp
that would be stamped by the material by the company.
( the polystyrene will be in nano scale) and it would reflect to the
sensor to read the interference, then the material will be
decomposed to the right box.
13. the light trash sorter
Methods and Materials
• Materials and Equipment :
-garbage(cans,plastic bottles, glass bottles).
-polystyrene stamps.
-ev3 robot lego (motors,color sensor,ev3 brick,lego bricks).
-LED light.
-sun cell board.
-wooden garbage box.
• Methods:
-the garbage box were built from wood and nails
-the ev3 robot was built and programed to read polystyrene -the motors
were programed to move in way to put the material in it place.
-stamps using led lights and color sensor to identify the material.
14. the light trash sorter
Results
the results was spectacular the robot sorted the materials in a write
way
by using polystyrene stamps and led light and we used solar cells to
make our project eco-friendly .and our project could be used every
where and time
and It could be part of trash sorter company or it
could be a trash sorter in any place and our
project would help the Qatari Society to sort the trash
in a easier way and teach every one using it how
to sort this valued materials.
15. we explored the amazing world of light. al-bairq helped us to
dell with 21st century using technology and let us light our
way to future.
