Introduction
RedTacton Technology is a new
intra-body communication based on
Human Area Network (HAN)
Technology that uses minute electric
field emitted on the surface of human
body as safe, high-speed network
transmission path.
RedTacton uses a point to point
network, also called as Pico Net,
which allows transfer of data between
two transceivers without the need of
server to store or process data.
4. History
4
1996 : Concept of intra-body communication was first proposed by T.G.
Zimmerman at IBM (International Business Machine Corporation) .
But, this technology having two limitations :
Maximum communication speed was 40Kbits/s.
Limited operating range through the body to a few centimetres.
These limitations arose when an electric sensor is used for the receiver because it
required two-line signal whereas in intra-body communication, only one signal line,
that is, the body itself, is essential which leads to unbalanced transmission.
2005 : To overcome these limitations, Japanese telecom company NTT (Nippon
Telegraph and Telephone Corporation) introduced a HAN (Human Area
Networking) Technology using Photonic Electric Field Sensors combining an
electro-optic crystal with laser beam called RedTacton Technology.
5. Features of RedTacton
5
Touch :
Human body
movements
such as
touching,
gripping used as
triggers for
exchanging the
data, locking or
unlocking, etc,.
Broadband :
Duplex, broadband
communication is
possible at
maximum speed of
10Mbits/s to
download device
drivers and sent
executive programs
instantly.
Any Media :
It uses
materials such
as dielectric
and conductive
transmitting
medium such
as glass, walls,
metals. water,
etc,.

An Alarm in RedTacton
devices are embedded
in medicine bottles to
transmit information
attributed. If person
touches the wrong
medicines, an alarm
will trigger on the
terminal to avoid
accidental medical
congestion.
Human Errors
Elimination
By touching or
standing in front of the
items, consumers can
receive full detail
information.
Marketing Applications
Anything is able to
printed instantly just by
touching the printer
from one hand and
holding or touching the
PC or digital camera in
other hand.
Intuitive Operations
9. Advantages of RedTacton
Security is more because distance is very less to
communicate and transferring of information.
Loss of data is less during transfer.
Due to high-speed network transmission path, transfer of
data is faster and easier.
Use of minimum amount of power.
It can achieve half-duplex communication at a maximum
speed of 10 Megabits/s , that is , 1.25 Megabytes/s.

10. Limitations & Challenges
• Limitations :
Limitations are imposed on length and location of propagating conductor and
on the thickness of dielectric.
No powerful applications is available till now.
Contact is essential for data transfer.
• Challenges :
Cost and time to develop RedTacton technology is expensive.
Competition with existing broadcast technologies such as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth.
Not useful unless many people use this technology.

11. Future Prospects
Walk-through ticket gate.
Cabinet which only opens to authorized people.
Television control which chooses favourite program automatically.
Research is going on for improvement of security.
People can open their cars by touching the door if key is in their pocket.
Artificial Intelligence in RedTacton.
Reduction in size to be embedded in other communication devices.
11
12. Conclusion
Difficult to hack as transmitting medium is body itself.
RedTacton Technology is expected to dominate Bluetooth Technology.
This technology brings a new dimension to communication by which we
can get any information effectively.
This technology enables the first practical Human Area Networking
between body-centred electronic devices and network devices embedded in
the environment.
RedTacton Technology is providing a high speed of 10 Mbits/s within short
distances.
