2. The table shows that there are 78 (78%) said that unrestricted usage of social media
causes addiction, while the other 22 (22%) said that it doesn’t cause addiction. On the other
hand, 57 (57%) of the respondents said that they are distracted on their academics and 43 (43%)
said that they are not distracted. Out of the total respondents, 72 (72%) said that unrestricted
usage of social media causes low performance on their academics and 28 (28%) said that it
doesn’t cause low performance on their academics.
Majority of the respondents stated that unrestricted usage affects their academic life and
lead them to addiction, distraction and low academic performance.
Akhtar (2013) mentioned that excessive usage of social media can become an addiction
especially among students and it can cause academic problems. The author suggested that social
media addiction can cause a fall in time spent on studies, major drop in grades, low interest in
extracurricular activities and lack of interest in classes.

Yes 70 70% 1.70 ≈ 2
No 30 30%
Total 100 100%

In question #6, out of the 100 respondents, 59 or 59% would spend most of their time
online than reading lessons while 41 or 41% of the remaining respondents spend most of their time
reading lessons than going online. The weighted arithmetic mean is 1.59 that is = 2, which means
most of the respondents spend their time online rather than reading lessons.
In question #7, 62 or 62% of the 100 respondents testified that spending too much time on
social media lessens the amount of time in studying for academics while the remaining 38 or 38%
of the respondents testified that spending too much time on social media will not lessen their time
in studying for academics. The weighted arithmetic mean is 1.52 that is = 2, which means most of
the respondents that spend too much time on social media lessens their time in studying for their
academics.
In question #8, 70 or 70% of the 100 respondents agreed that engaging in academic forums
and activities on social media raises their understanding of the topics being discussed in the class
while the remaining 30 or 30% of the respondents disagreed about engaging in academic forums
and activities on social media to raise their understanding of the topics being discussed in the class.
The weighted arithmetic mean is 1.70 that is = 2, which means most of the respondents raises their
understanding of the topics by engaging in academic forums and activities on social media
Majority of the respondents spend most of their time on social media and by spending too
much on social media, it lessens their time in studying for their academics. However, by engaging
in academic forums and activities, it raises their understanding of the topics being discussed in the
class.
Astodello (2016) indicated that students should be encouraged to limit the time they
spend on social media sites and be advised to rather substitute those hours with reading some
learning materials – short stories, novels, etc. to improve their vocabulary. Since the use of social
4. media sites had affected the academic performance of students negatively, there is a need to
introduce the students' other information resources or materials that would motivate and help
them perform well in their academics.

Question #10. Is there
no improvement in my
grades since I become
engaged into these
social networking sites?
Yes 57 57% 1.57 ≈ 2
No 43 43%
Total 100 100%
Yes, there’s no
improvements on
grades of respondents
5. since they became
engaged to social
media networks.
Question #11. Does
engaging in academic
forums and activities on
social media increases
my understanding of
topics discussed in
class?
Yes 60 60% 1.6 ≈ 2
No 40 40%
Total 100 100%
Yes, social media has
an effect to the
academic
performances of the
respondents.
Question #12. Does
group discussion on
social media yield good
results as far as my
academics are
concerned?
Yes 69 69% 1.69 ≈ 2
No 31 31%
Total 100 100%
Yes, Group
discussions on social
media yield good
results as far as the
academics are
concerned.
In question #9, out of 100 respondents, 75 or 75% of the respondents decline any school
activities or academic projects due to social networking sites while the remaining 25 or 25% of the
respondents willingly attend to any school activities or academic projects without being affected
by social networking sites. The weighted arithmetic mean is 1.75 that is = 2, which means most of
the students decline any academic participation due to social networking sites.
In question #10, 57 or 57% of the 100 respondents showed no improvements in their grades
since they had become engaged in using social media while the remaining 43 or 43% of the
respondents don’t have any problems with their grades despite using social media. The weighted
6. arithmetic mean is 1.57 that is = 2, which means most of the respondents showed no improvements
in their grades since they had become engaged in social media.
In question #11, 60 or 60% of the 100 respondents agreed that social media has an effect
to their academic performances while the remaining 40 or 40% of the respondents disagreed that
social media has an effect to their academic performances. The weighted arithmetic mean is 1.6
that is = 2, which means most of the respondents’ academic performances were affected by using
social media.
In question #12, 69 or 69% of the 100 respondents responded “yes” that group discussions
on social media yield good results as far as the academics are concerned while the remaining 31
or 31% of the respondents responded “no” that group discussions on social media yield good
results as far as the academics are concerned. The weighted arithmetic mean is 1.69 that is = 2,
which means most of the respondents agreed that group discussions on social media yield good
results as far as the academics are concerned.
Group discussions on social media yield good results with regards to the academics.
However, majority of the respondents decline any academic participation due to social media and
thus, their grades showed no improvements since they had become engaged in social media and
their academic performances were affected.
Sharma and Vishvakarma (2016) asserted that social media are sometimes used for
educational purposes and sometimes for non-academic purpose, which adversely impact on the
academic performance of the students.
Data Analysis
In this study, researchers selected 100 respondents from the G12 IT students of PHINMA-
Cagayan De Oro College. Majority of the data gathered from the survey questionnaires hold the
weighted arithmetic mean of 2,which falls on “Yes”. Out of the 100 respondents, over 78 or 78%
of the respondents identified “Addiction”. “Distraction” was also identified by 57 or 57% of the
respondents. Also, 72 or 72% of the respondents identified “Low Academic Performances”.
7. In continuation of the survey questions which serves as basis of the research
question, thesurvey questions #6, #7, and #8 holds the same weighted arithmetic mean of 2, which
falls on “Yes. On the 6th question, out of 100 respondents, 59 or 59% of the respondents responded
“Yes”, that they would spend their time going online rather than reading their lessons. On the 7th
question, 62 or 62% of the respondents responded “Yes”, that spending too much time on social
media lessens their time in studying for academics. Lastly on the 8th question, 70 or 70% of the
respondents responded “Yes”, that engaging in academic forums and activities on social media
raises their understanding of the topics being discussed in the class.
Moreover, questions #9, #10, #11, and #12 also holds the same weighted arithmetic mean
of 2, which falls on “Yes”. On the 9th question, out of 100 respondents, 75 or 75% of the
respondents responded “Yes”, that they decline any academic participation due to social
networking sites. On the 10th question, 57 or 57% of the respondents responded “Yes”, that they
showed no improvements in their grades since they had become engaged in social media. On the
11th question, 60 or 60% of the respondents responded “Yes”, that social media has an effect to
their academic performances. Lastly, on the 12th question, 69 or 69% of the respondents responded
“Yes”, that group discussions on social media yield good results as far as the academics are
concerned.
