journals and magazines, working periodically with the
London bookseller.
Richardson made the translation from the master printer
to novelist on 6 November 1740 with the publication of
Pamela.
Pamela is sometimes regarded as "the first novel in
English"or "the first modern novel."
4. Pamela Andrews , the heroine of 'Pamela',
represented "Richardson's insistence upon well-
defined feminine roles“ and was part of common
fear held during the 18th century that women were
'too bold'.
After the failures of the Pamela’s sequel Richardson
begun to compose a new novel.
‘Clarissa’- His masterpiece.
The response to the novel was positive and public
began to describe the title heroine as “divine
Clarissa”.

but also in Europe.

Lady B.
Work for Mr.B.
In her letters and diary Pamela records her
experiences, emotions, feelings and thoughts.
7. The sub- title: “Virtue Rewarded”

In the novel the virtue is tied to rewarded.
Pamela will not give up her VIRTUE. (
willingly sleep with her master)
He comes very close to attempting to rape her,
but ultimetly does not.
Eventually proposes marriage to her , and this
is her “reward” for her virtue.
Pamela preserved her chastity and thus she
was rewarded.
