1. ‘Seashell’ is the title of the lastest novel by Aiyuni Sun. This science fiction tale, like
Aiyuni’s previous book titled ‘Current’, is set beneath the ocean. The author describes life
underwater in such clear detail that the reader can easily imagine living in this magical
world.
The story is about the only son of a marine scientist who secretly follows his father
to his underwater laboratory at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean. Kayan is curious about his
father’s work but Professor Miraj refuses to tell him anything. One day, Kayan steals onto
the Seabug, a small submarine which takes the Professor to the ocean laboratory called C-
Shell. When the stowaway is discovered, his father is furious. By then the Seabug has
returned to land. There is nothing the Professor can do. He warns Kayan to stay out of
trouble and is soon lost in his research. Left to wander around by himself, Kayan stumbles
upon a locked room. The sixteen-year-old discovers the secret of the locked room and
realizes that he and his father are in grave danger. In fact, the world is in great danger.
This story keeps the reader in suspense right to the end. The reader will be greatly
entertained and will be tempted to read all two hundred plus pages in one sitting. The novel
is not only enjoyable to read but it also contains a message about how serious problems can
be solved with courage. ‘Seashell’ is highly recommended for readers in the 12 to 17 age
group.

Good morning to the principal, teachers and students of Bugisiah Islamic Secondary School. I
am here today to share my personal encounter for bullying and how I dealt with peer pressure
while growing up. People who know me yesterday and even my fans would probably surprised to
know I was bullied many times when I am a child and teenager. It wasn’t brutal if I was never
harmed physically except on a few occasions but it wasn’t pleasant either. My first experience
being bullied was when I was in year two. I was bullied by a girl in my class. He would keep saying
hurtful things to me until I smile and he would threaten me until I was too afraid to tell our
teacher. My second experience was in form one. I was a timid girl and did not know who to make
friends. When a girl asks me once to play with her and her friends, I was overjoyed. As you might
have guessed, I ended up being bullied by her. She would took my handwritten notes and
storybooks that she likes. She would also get angry if I didn’t do whatever she told me to, and
pinch me and pull my hair if I did someone that didn’t please her. It was traumatizing experience!
The thing is, I was too scared to speak up and fight back. My mother was angry at her for bullying
me and angry at me for not fighting back. You see, I am more afraid of losing a friend that I let her
do whatever she wanted. Now I tell myself, ‘So,what?’ when something said that they wouldn’t
want to be friends with me anymore. They can do whatever they like and I don’t need them at all.
That was my moment of empowerment. Whatever my age, you shouldn’t have to feel pressured or
bullied to act in a certain manner to be accepted. Just be yourself and real friends would accept
you for who you are. Thank you.
