2. DIFFERENCE BETWEEN TEASER AND INFO POSTERS
• Teaser posters are created much earlier than the info posters in
order to notify consumers that a highly anticipated film/franchise
will be coming or returning to screens.
• The teaser poster does not reveal any clues towards the films
storyline, with the location and protagonists kept out of the teaser
posters for horror films. The antagonist may also be kept from the
audience unless, like the Friday the 13th franchise, the antagonist is
the synonymous feature of the franchise.
• The information poster tends to contain the names of the actors
and a tagline for the film. Whilst the teaser trailer usually keeps this
tagline, the actors involved in the film remain anonymous to the
consumer.
• Information posters tend to also contain features such as the rating
and possibly reviews, which are not available to the teaser poster.
3. FINAL DESTINATION 5 (2011)
In the poster shown on the right, there is a lack of any information
regarding the film, and that is what a teaser poster is meant for.
The viewer/consumer is only meant to recognise what film this is
and when it is expected to be released. With the Final Destination
franchise, the skull shown in the poster is synonymous with the
promotional campaign of their films. The font of the number 5 also
matches the same font used by the franchise, and so consumers
can assume that a new Final Destination film will be released in the
coming August. Other content on the poster includes:
• 3D viewing
• Website for the franchise
• Production and Distribution companies involved with this film.
4. THE DARK KNIGHT RISES (2012)
This teaser poster does differ from the Final Destination 5
poster from before as this includes a location shot. Gotham
city is established in this teaser poster, however any
important locations that are included in the film are not
shown. In order to leave out the title of the film on the
teaser, the batman logo, which is well recognised globally, is
placed in the centre of the poster. Not only does this help
consumers identify the film, it allows creators to focus fully
on the creativity of the destruction shown. Again, viewing
experiences and the expected date of release are featured at
the bottom of the poster.
5. DEEPWATER HORIZON (2016)
This Deepwater Horizon teaser poster, much like the Dark Knight
Rises poster, shows the main location of the storyline and shows
the destruction that is seemingly involved in the plotline. This is
an insight into the story that is given in a teaser as this film is not
part of a franchise, and therefore the audience will not be aware
of what occurs, whereas consumers can predict what will occur in
a franchise film such as the ones analysed earlier. Because of this,
actors/actresses for the film will be fully unknown and so the main
actor (Mark Wahlberg) is credited on the poster. This allows the
consumer to predict what type of film this will be based on
Wahlberg’s previous appearances. As there is no recognisable
trait of the film, the title, credits and release date become the
central focus of the poster in order to attract consumers to the
content this way.
6. CONCLUSION
In conclusion, I have determined that as my short story is not
part of a large franchise, then I cannot use a signature
association of the film as that does not exist. This means I will
follow the ideas of the Deepwater Horizon teaser poster. I will
include a snippet of the location of the short and some of the
props featured in the film , however I will not show any
characters as I wish to keep the element of ‘teaser’ and keep that
layer of mystery.
