2. What is it ?
▪ Myo- (muscle) –Cardial (relating to the heart)
▪ commonly known as a heart attack
▪ occurs when blood flow stops to a part of the
heart muscles usually caused by a blood clot,
causing damage to the heart muscle.
(ischaemia )*
* an inadequate blood supply to an organ or part
of the body, especially the heart muscles.
3. Causes
▪ Increased risk by:
1. smoking
2. a high-fat diet
3. diabetes
4. high cholesterol
5. high blood pressure
6. being overweight or obese
4. Symptoms
▪ chest pain – the chest can feel like it is being pressed or squeezed
by a heavy object, and pain can radiate from the chest to the jaw,
neck, arms and back
▪ shortness of breath
▪ feeling weak and/or lightheaded
▪ overwhelming feeling of anxiety
5. Treating heart attacks
▪ Treatment for a heart attack will
depend on how serious it is. Two
main treatments are:
▪ sing medication to dissolve blood
clots . (The aspirin will help to
thin the blood and reduce the
risk of a heart attack)
▪ surgery to help restore blood to
the heart
