Learning the learning skills is presentation slide I presented to IT Audit Group at July 22nd 2021. It explains why learning is so essential and important things in this age, and why we should mastering meta learning skills, including active learning and active recall

Terus Belajar dan Mengembangan Kapabilitas:
1. Meningkatkan kompetensi diri untuk menjawab tantangan
yang selalu berubah
2. Membantu orang lain belajar
3. Menyelesaikan tugas dengan kualitas terbaik

3. Why?
Learning is essential way to adapt
3
• “The only constant is change”
• Everything is changing, faster
• Exponential disruption:
o Technology Transformation
o Events (e.g. COVID-19)
• Skill requirement is a moving target
• Stay relevant, gain competitive advantage, compensate
experience (in some cases)

5. Why?
Life is endless Learning

Why?
New Tech = New Subject to Learn
8. Meta Learning: Learn how to Learn
Meta Learning: The skills to Learn
• Learning How to Learn
• Survive the the “learning pit”
• Survive the job, market, and
era demand
• “Sharpen your Saw”
• Learn more, faster, work
smarter
• No. 3 Emerging Skills

9. Soft Skills – Why Meta Learning
“…To be a junior programmer, you need to know at least
three programming languages. And to survive as a
programmer, self-directed learning is necessary. So you
need one soft skill, that is ‘How to learn’…”

• Work with ex US President, Celebrities, Tesla, Google,
Marvel, Virgin, Nike, Zappos, SpaceX, NYU, GE, Fox Studios,
CalTech, Harvard, etc.
• Host of “Kwik Brain Podcast”, Top 5 podcast in education
and self improvement (Apple podcast & Spotify)
11. F- Forget
11
• Forget what you already know
about the subject.
• “Kosongkan Gelasmu”
• Start with a beginners mind
• Forget about anything that’s
not urgent and important
• Forget your limitations
• I have bad memory
• I am slow reader
12. A-Active
12
• Ask questions
• Take notes
• Get Involved!
• ACTIVE LEARNING
• The more active you are,
the more you will learn
14. A-Active
14
Use Active Recall while self study:
• Active Recall is regarded as the best
study technique in the literature.
• How:
1. Explain the concept to yourself
(why.. how)
2. Check back and reconsolidate
(what’s wrong/ right)
3. Verbalize the recall
4. Review each slide/concept
5. Write concise notes (write points
to trigger the memory)
6. Repeat the recall 2-3x before test
7. You don’t have perfect recall

Active recall is regarded as best study technique to study
Active recall is not commonly used as study technique
15. A-Active
15
Use Active Recall downsides:
• Takes lot of brain power, the difficulties
will discourage you to SKIP the
information without fully knowing it
• You essentially just REREADING
(common with flashcards and quizzlet)
• Looking an answer prior to answering
• Not thinking deeply about why you got
the recall wrong

16. S-State
16
• Get excited, fascinated,
curious
• You are the only person in
control of your state.
• How to improve?
• Change your posture or
your body or breathing.
• Sit or stand the way you
would if you were totally
energized.
• Think about how you’ll
benefit from the
information.
• Get motivated
17. T-Teach
17
• Learn with the intention of
teaching it to somebody else.
• or presenting
• When I teach/present something:
• I get to learn it twice.
• I want to explain it simply
• I want they understand
