The student learned several technologies through constructing their magazine product:
- Using Google to research layouts of other rock magazines for reference
- Using Blogger to organize research and planning by writing blog posts
- Using different cameras like a Kodak compact and DSLRs to take photos for the magazine
- Using Photoshop for photo editing, designing the front cover, and adding layers/effects
- Using QuarkXPress to layout the contents page and double page spread, learning how to utilize its grid system and tools to create a professional design.
1. Q.6 What have you learnt about technologies
from the process of constructing this
product?
2. To start my research for my magazine I
had to look at other rock magazines
and how they look, I researched most
of this on Google looking at different
magazines. I looked at the placing of
photo’s and also the text and the
language of how they present it on the
page.
I searched the front
covers, contents page and
double page spreads to see
how most of them are laid
out so I knew how to make
mine. This research gave
me help on how most of
rock magazines are like.
3. Blogger is also good for keep track of all my lessons
and what I have done in them by writing a diary
and adding to it each day about what I did in the
lesson.
Throughout my magazine I have been putting my research on blogger so all the research is
organised and easy to get to. It has helped a lot blogging everything, I can put different parts
on which I can go back and add to like planning.
4. To make my front cover, contents page and double page spread I
had to take a number of photographs to go into my product. I
took my photos with a number of different camera which I think
were the best for that moment. For taking live shots when I
watched the bands I used a small compact Kodak camera.
While taking photographs for my double page spread I used two
camera’s one Fujifilm FinePix S2500 and Pentax K100D. This gave
me a range of different looks in my photographs.
5. Throughout the making of my product I have been editing on an editing software called
Photoshop. I have used it for editing my front cover image and using it as a tool for
designing the front cover. While making the front cover I have used tools for editing the
photo. I have use tools such as the eye dropper to get the same colour for parts of the
face so I can colour things like the light in the eye making it look normal without the light
in the eye but having the same colour from around the edges so it doesn’t look fake.
I also used Photoshop for
creating the front cover. I used
tools such as the layer style so I
could add a shadow behind the
main photograph.
6. Using photoshop
To add the title I added the text
in a text box before changing the
colour, I chose blue because
when people filled out my
questionnaire blue was the most
popular colour. To get the title at
the back I slid the layer to the
bottom of the photo and it
automatically moves it to the
back.
For one of my images on
my front cover I wanted
to make the photo stand
out so I right clicked on
the photo layer and went
on layer style before
adding a drop shadow.
7. Using QuarkXPress
This is one of the screen shots I took With this screenshot this was taken
throughout the making of my contents. later on in the making of my contents,
In this screenshot I was adding more here I was adding a photo box ready
text but it had to be fitted in between for my photo I was later adding. I did
the box above and the photograph this so I could place the rest of my
below. I did this by changing the text content around the page and it
sizes and guiding the text box between wouldn’t need to be moved or
the column guides. changed.
8. Using QuarkXPress
This is what I started of with, this is
my first draft. When I was creating
this I didn’t feel as if it looked good
enough or like a real magazine would
look like. In this screenshot I was
adding the stand first blue box to go
behind the writing. I did this so the
stand first would stand out and it
would be one of the things the
reader first looks. This is done to get
them more interested in the article.
This screenshot was taken later on in the
making of the double page spread. Here I
was stretching and tilting the title over the
two pages, I did this to fit the codes and
conventions of a normal rock magazine
double page spread.
9. For making my product I also used QuarkXPress
to create my contents page and double page
spread. I learnt new things on Quark while
making my contents page and double page
spread. What I think is good about Quark is that
while your making a page your product is in
grids you can stick to so everything you are
doing isn't all over the place and are in line.
I like the way my contents page and double
page spread came out. I made them try and
look as professional as I could and Quark helped
with that with the tools and grids
