Troat swab
Why we collect specimen collection?
■ It’s a common component of routine checkups for your health. It goes hand in
hand with lab tests allowing medical proportionals to Obtain tissue or fluids to
look for any changes in your health
■ It is a gathering of matter From the body to aid in the process of medical
diagnosis.
Throat swab
■ A throat swab culture is a laboratory test that Is done to identify germs that may
cause infection in the throat
■ A sample from the throat is collected by Swabbing the throat and placing the
sample into a special cup (culture) that allows infections to grow . If an
organisms grows, the culture is positive and the presence of infection is
confirmed. The type of infection is found using a Microscope, chemical tests or
both.
Throat culture diagnose
■ Diphtheria
■ Gonorrhea
■ Rheumatic fever or scarlet fever
■ Strep throat or (bacterial tonsillitis)
■ Thrush
■ Whooping cough (pertussis)
Diphtheria and it’s symptoms
■ It is a serious communicable bacterial disease that causes Severe inflammation
of the nose, throat and windpipe (trachea)
SYMPTOMS
■ A thick grey – white coating that May cover the back of your throat,nose
and tongue
■ A high temperature (fever)
■ Sore throat
■ Swollen glands in your neck
■ Difficulty breathing and swollowing
Gonorrhoea and it’s symptoms
■ When the infection affect the tissue of the throat
SYMPTOMS
■ Swollen, burning ,or painful glands in your throat
■ Difficulty swollowing
■ Flu-like symptoms
■ Visible irritation,redness or lesions in the back of the throat
Rheumatic fever and it’s symptoms
■ I is rare complicatiocation of Untreated strep throat or scarlet fever. It most
commonly affects children and teens. In severe cases, It can lead to serious
health problem that affect your Child’s heart, joints or other organs
SYMPTOMS
■ Swollen, tender and red joints (arthritis ) – especially your child’s knees
ankles and elbows that may move around from day to day
■ Chest pain,fatigue, fever, headache, muscle ache, Swollen,red tonsils
Strep throat and it’s symptoms
■ Strep throat is an infection In your throat and tonsils . The inflammation
typically affect the surrounding area of your throat as well, which causes
a Sore throat (pharygitis)
SYMPTOMS
■ Chills
■ Headache
■ Loss of appetite
■ Abdominal pain
■ Nausea and vomiting
Thrush and it’s symptoms
■ A swab looks similar to a small round cotton bud and is used to collect s sample
of Cells or discharge from your vagina
SYMPTOMS
■ Redness and soreness inside and at the corners of your mouth
■ Loss of sense of taste
■ Cottony feeling in your mouth
Whooping cough and it’s symptoms
■ Whooping cough is a bacterial infection that gets into your nose and throat. It
spreads easily, but vaccines like DTaP (diphtheria,tetanus and pertussis) and
TDaP (tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis) can help prevent it in children and
adults
SYMPTOMS
■ mild coughing
■ Sneezing
■ Runny nose
■ Low fever
Happens during a throat culture
1. Ask you to tilt back your head.
2. Ask you to open your mouth wide and say,”Aaahh”. They may gently push your
tongue down with a flat piece of wood. This can help them to better see the
back of your throat
3. Pass a cotton swab along the back area of your throat and tonsils to take a
sample of cells.
4. Place the swab into a sterile, sealed container
Happens after a throat culture
■ After a throat culture, your provider sends the sample to a lab. The lab
technician puts the sample onto a plate or into a sterile container
■ They add chemicals to the sample to see if bacteria or fungi grow. This usually
takes about two days for fungus. A negative throat culture means that no
bacteria or fungi have grown. A positive throat culture means that the sample did
grow bacteria or fungi
Happens before a throat culture
■ Before a throat culture, your provider will tell you what to expect during the test.
The test isn’t painful, but you may feel a brief tickling or gagging sensation at the
back of your throat.
■ If your child is having a throat culture, your provider may ask you to keep your
child still. You may want to sit them on your lap or hold their hand.
■ Tell your provider if you’ve recently taken antibiotics or used mouthwash. These
can affect the test results
When is a throat culture performed?
■ Healthcare providers may give you a throat culture if you have a sore throat. The
throat culture can show the cause of your illness
Why would I need a throat culture?
■ A throat culture is a type of bacteria culture test. Viruses cause many sore
throats. But sometimes bacterial infections and fungal infections lead to sore
throats. For instance, bacteria group A streptococcus infection causes strep
throat.
Your provider may suspect strep throat if you also have:
■ Abdominal pain
■ Fever
■ Headache
■ Loss of appetite
■ Pain and difficulty swollowing
■ Red spots on the roof of your mouth

The lab technician puts the sample onto a plate or into a sterile container ■ They add chemicals to the sample to see if bacteria or fungi grow. This usually takes about two days for fungus. A negative throat culture means that no bacteria or fungi have grown. A positive throat culture means that the sample did grow bacteria or fungi

The test isn’t painful, but you may feel a brief tickling or gagging sensation at the back of your throat. ■ If your child is having a throat culture, your provider may ask you to keep your child still.
