Editor's Notes
Gender Identity by Aaron Miller
Introduction. Pronouns are commonly used to refer to someone without using their name, which makes it critical to identify them correctly. The different types of pronouns are: he/him/his for an individual who identifies as male, she/her/hers for an individual who identifies as female, and they/them/their for an individual who identifies as gender neutral. According to Hugh F. Murray III (2021), “Two million people in the United States identify as transgender or nonbinary” (para. 5).
Question A: Discuss the findings from your first scholarly article. According to Lexi Croswell (2021), “You can't always tell what someone's gender pronouns are by looking at them. Asking for, remembering, and using someone's gender pronouns is a positive way to support the people you work with.” (para. 6). Thus, when using the correct pronoun, it creates a respect and support for all individuals. Additionally, Croswell stated (2021), “An easy way for companies to introduce gender pronouns into the conversation is to include them in email signatures. This action serves not only as a reminder internally but also builds awareness externally.” (para. 10). Utilizing the email signature to self-identify as which pronoun you prefer makes it easy but also, helps remind within the organization and helps build awareness. Lastly, Croswell stated (2021), “Adding gender pronouns to your company email signature is a great first step to building gender inclusivity in the workplace. It brings awareness to something that many people might not have thought about before. Moreover, it could springboard a discussion on gender pronouns that further educates people on why it’s an important part of people’s identity that should be respected. There’s always more work to be done when it comes to inclusivity, but the most difficult obstacle is getting started.” (para. 14). As using the correct and proper pronouns in the workplace will help with inclusion and further educates workers on the importance of gender identity.
Question B: Discuss the findings from your second scholarly article. According to Hugh F. Murray III (2021), “The first advantage is practical and based on increasing cultural diversity in the workplace. People of different cultures and backgrounds are interacting with each other more often.” (para. 3). This helps the workplace acknowledge and incorporate cultural diversity within the workplace. Additionally, Murray stated (2021), “The second advantage concerns creating an open and accepting workplace for individuals who do not fit traditional notions of gender.” (para. 5). The use of proper pronouns helps create an open and accepting workplace for all individuals despite any differences. However, Murray continued (2021), “There are some drawbacks to the uniform use of pronoun identifiers in signature blocks and biographies. Some individuals may not feel comfortable publicly identifying their gender. In addition, the use of pronoun identifiers perpetuates the idea that, in a professional setting, one's gender is one of the most important things to know about an individual. Finally, the practice has become somewhat political.” (para. 7-10). Individuals might not feel comfortable in using a different pronoun publicly which can cause an awkward environment for individuals with this issue. Additionally, stating an importance of use on the proper pronoun implies that it is the most important thing about the individual instead of their personality, values, and traits. Furthermore, with the use of certain pronouns can create a toxic environment due to the politicized stance on gender identity.
How are both articles similar. In both articles they both discuss the importance of cultural diversity through support, openness and acceptance. Additionally, how it creates inclusion within the workplace. Lastly, how it is critical to create internal and external awareness on the use of the correct and proper pronouns associated with gender identity.
How are both articles different. In Why Sharing Gender Pronouns in the Workplace Matters by Lexi Croswell, she does not discuss any negatives for the use of pronouns in the workplace. Whereas, in the article by Hugh F. Murray II, he discusses how it can make the individuals uncomfortable to discuss their pronoun in a public workplace setting. Additionally, discusses how it can create a sense of importance on their pronoun and gender is the most important thing to know about the individual. And lastly, how the use of the correct and proper pronouns has created a politicized stance, which can cause an issue within the workplace environment.
Question E. Based on your observations of these two articles, discuss which article’s findings you agree with and share why this is the case. The use of the proper pronouns helps create a positive support for all individuals in the workplace as it shows respect, openness, and acceptance. Thus, it creates the environment and support needed for individuals to feel welcomed and part of the team. Additionally, it creates an internal and external awareness about the issue and situations that are occurring about gender identity. Lastly, I agree that the use of the proper pronouns can create a sense that it is the only important thing to know about the person and that it can cause other values, traits, and characteristics about the person to be of a lesser value.
Conclusion. The importance of gender identity within the workplace and society relies on the awareness, acceptance, and openness. If we are all made aware of the differences in people and develop an acceptance and openness to all, then we can develop and create a respect and successful relationship with everyone. Additionally, respectfully using the correct and proper pronouns will develop a more diverse workplace and help create inclusion within the organization.
