1. Traditional classroom
A traditional classroom is a learning space in which the teacher provides
face-to-face instruction to students and communication between and
among teacher and students is face to face.
Traditional schools have been around for years and almost everyone has
attended them. The schools are divided into grades and consist of public
institutions governed by the school district with both primary and
secondary education system. It includes teacher-student delivery of
information in a classroom setup. Some Colleges and universities also use
traditional educational methods to facilitate learning although it is faced
with many challenges.
In addition to choosing a school program, many students now have to
make a distinctly 21st-century choice: whether to take classes in person or
online. The continual evolution of technology enables a growing number
of students to use on the Internet to take classes instead of the attending
class in a traditional classroom setting. While distance learning is an ideal
solution for certain types of students, others are better off sticking with the
old-fashioned academic format. For those debating whether classroom
learning is a good fit or not, consider the various advantages and
disadvantages before coming to a conclusion.
There are some pros and cons related to the traditional classrooms.
Let’e examine the pros:
 Total participation: Students will have a direct interaction with
the teachers and can be able to ask for questions or more
explanation on areas they didn’t understand facilitating
participative learning
 Face to face interaction: Students can easily hold face to face
interactions and solve complex assignments as a group with other
classmates.
 Students can enjoy free daily and weekend events: Events such as
guest lecturers or film screening are organized by the institutions
for edutainment.
 Establish responsibility among the students: Tradition systems
use a fixed timetable which must be followed by all students this
helps in preparing students for future responsibilities.
 Learn through real examples: Attending classes will enable

2. students to gain necessary skills and knowledge that can promote
their contribution to the society through real examples.
 Wide knowledge: Traditional schools equip students with a wide
scope of knowledge as compared to other alternative methods of
education. Students can learn technical skills, social and even
sports skills.
 Teacher-centered learning: Teachers are the main source of
information to the students. The teachers not only equip
knowledge to students but also help them in solving problems and
giving advice. They act as role models to the students.
 Increased student achievement: Teachers work together with the
students encouraging them to improve their grades in school. They
act as a source of motivation for improving students grades in the
classroom.
Cons
 Cost of commuting: Using traditional education system is more
expensive due to the increased cost of commuting to the school
and also looking for the accommodation within the school
environment.
 No flexible study hours. Those working may find it difficult to
study in traditional universities and colleges due to rigid
schedules. Use of modern methods can minimize the challenges
faced by students.
 Less time in pursuing other tasks: Students have to organize their
daily task based on class attendance timetable and this leaves them
with less time to pursue other tasks.
 Loans: Traditional university students may take students loans at
high-interest in order to facilitate their education programs.
 Lack of motivation: Students may feel that they don’t have the
chance to express their interests and skills using the traditional
education systems. They view attending school as an obligation
they’re mandated to carry rather than being there because they
want to.
 Lack of career direction: Allowing students to focus on different
interests within the school may divert their attention in the
classroom and this will affect their future career growth. Students
will spend more time and effort learning something which will not

3. help them later in their lives and in their future career.
 Students become passive listeners: in traditional schools, students
merely absorb the information being taught in class. Students are
supposed to listen to the teachers and sometimes their lack interest
of the lecturer becoming passive listeners. The students have to
learn with the pace of their teachers.
 Use of authoritarian approach: Teachers use their authority in
making all the decisions concerning the students leaving students
with no room to express themselves. This can widen the gap
between the teachers and the students.
In conclusion in my opinion most students consider the traditional
classroom environment beneficial for learning because they can interact
with the teacher and their classmates. Especially for people who learn
better through cooperative activities and group work, the possibility of
asking questions and receiving immediate answers is important. Many
students prefer face-to-face interactions to technology-mediated
conversations. Some students need constant reassurance that what they do
is correct and that they are going in the right direction, so they need
feedback to keep them moving.
Some students don’t have access to technological devices, so online
classes are out of the question. Some don’t know how to use them, and
some don’t care about them. In a traditional classroom environment,
learning begins with the teacher sharing his knowledge with students,
proceeds with discussions between the teacher and the students and ends
with the new information written in notebooks. For students of
specializations that have nothing to do with technology, printed courses
and books from the library are, in most cases, enough.
