Travelling waves and Phase velocity of
travelling waves
Travelling Waves:
Also known as mechanical waves.
It is produce due to disturbance of the equilibrium position of
particle moves in space.
Example:
gamma rays ,x-rays ,ultraviolet waves, visible light,
Infared waves, microwaves, radio waves..
 Two Phenomenon:
Observable (Ocean wave).
 Non-Observable (when medium is confined b/w two short
point).
Travelling waves propagate like sine wave.
Eqution.
Y=Asin(KX –wt)
A=Amplitude
K= contant
Phase Velocity Of Travelling Waves:
Define:
The velocity of individual wave is called phase
velocity.
Mathematical Form:
 Vp= w/k
w = angular frequency
k = wave
