The ankle joint is a synovial hinge joint between the lower end of the tibia, the lateral malleolus of the fibula, and the talus bone of the foot. It is stabilized by ligaments including the deltoid ligament, lateral ligament, fibrous capsule, and inferior transverse tibiofibular ligament. The talus bone fits into the upper articular surfaces of the tibia and fibula like a wedge to prevent displacement and allow hinging motions.
