9 Neutron - Group #1
• DEFINITION:
• Respiratory system - is the set of organs that allows a person to breathe and
exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide throughout the body.
• Lungs – main organ
• Oxygen = GOOD
• Carbon Dioxide = WASTE
• MAIN PARTS OF THE RESPIRATORY SYSTEM AND THEIR FUNCTIONS:
1) Nostrils
- are involved in air intake
- Tiny hairs called Cilia filters out dust and other particles present in the air and
protects the nasal passage and other regions of the respiratory tract.
2) Pharynx
- Cone - shaped passageway leading from the oral and nasal cavities in the head to
the esophagus and larynx
3) LARYNX
- the hollow muscular organ forming an air passage to the lungs and holding the
vocal cords in humans and other mammals
- Also known as the voice box
4) Trachea
- also known as windpipe.
- The trachea filters the air we inhale and branches into the bronchi.
5) Bronchi
- The bronchi are the two air tubes that branch off from the trachea and carry
atmospheric air directly into the lungs which branch off into narrower tubes
called Bronchioles.
6) Bronchioles
- tinier, narrower tubular air passages that lead to the Alveoli
7) Alveoli
- are tiny air sacs found on the bronchioles where the exchange of gases take
place.
- *blood – carrying capillaries*
- Oxygen dissolves through a membrane and is absorbed by the blood in
these capillaries (attaches to the red blood cells) which then goes off to the
circulatory system.
8) Diaphragm
- a dome - shaped muscle located at the bottom of the lungs
- When we breathe in, the diaphragm contracts and pull downward. Due to
this movement the space in the lungs increases and pulls air into the lungs.
- When we breathe out, the diaphragm expands and reduces the amount of
space for the lungs and forces air out.
