Starting the Research Process Formulating a specific, applicable research problem statement is an important step in beginning a research process. The problem statement defines the focus of the research study, dictates what methods and tools will be used, and sets the stage for all subsequent elements of the research process. It's time to complete part one, of your final project development. So, during week 5, you are charged with identifying which case study, you're going to use for your final project. You have 4 to choose from. You have a variety of issues, a variety of ages, a number of mental health issues that come up, among and between the case studies, and you are welcome to choose any one that you would like to focus on. You are also welcome to choose any of the participants, within the case study to focus your attention on. You need to choose one case study, and identify one client, a specified client. It may not be one person, but one client, your client might be a couple, or might be a family. Next, you need to decide which one of the behavioral issues, or presenting problems you're going to focus on, and you will have to specify exactly what you're digging into. So for example, a male who's referred to counseling by his girlfriend is suffering from a variety of things, following a combat experience. So you may want to focus on his trauma, or you may want to focus more specifically on something else. And you can choose that, but you'll need to identify exactly what the presenting problem is, exactly what the mental health issue diagnosis disorder is, that you're focusing on. And finally, you have to choose one clinical intervention to look at for potential treatment, with your case study. Now if you look at the worksheet for completing the week five assignment, you complete part 1 of the final project worksheet. Before moving through diagnostic decision making, a social worker needs to conduct an interview that builds on a biopsychosocial assessment. New parts are added that clarify the timing, nature, and sequence of symptoms in the diagnostic interview. The Mental Status Exam (MSE) is a part of that process. The MSE is designed to systematically help diagnosticians recognize patterns or syndromes of a person’s cognitive functioning. It includes very particular, direct observations about affect and other signs of which the client might not be directly aware. When the diagnostic interview is complete, the diagnostician has far more detail about the fluctuations and history of symptoms the patient self-reports, along with the direct observations of the MSE. This combination greatly improves the chances of accurate diagnosis. Conducting the MSE and other special diagnostic elements in a structured but client-sensitive manner supports that goal. Positive response to this issue will lead to extensive changes to the training activities rendering them more comprehensive and in-depth so as to greatly influence the outcomes. The outcomes that are expected is that it may help direct the design and implementation of future psychological training programs and study for inmates, as well as contributing to the creation of best practice recommendations for such programs. The intended implication from this presentation is to provide the relevant agencies and instituti9on with added knowledge, and recommendation on new practices so as to make the programs offered in corrections more efficient to the point where we would be able to observe positive changes in offender behavior and low rates of recidivism. What knowledge and skill areas will be the focus of the training or webinar? · What a cognitive approach is and what it does. · The method's origins and how they're still relevant .
