The Quattrocento was an important period in 15th century European art known as the early Renaissance. It began in Florence under the patronage of the Medici family and saw a shift towards individual artists and more realistic, classical styles of painting, sculpture, and architecture that imitated Greek and Roman works. Quattrocento painting specifically developed techniques like linear perspective to create more realistic scenes on canvas. Styles evolved from the intricate detail of early International Gothic to a more dynamic style influenced by Flemish realism in the second half of the 15th century.
