2. Slow Pacing
For the first 27 seconds of this clip we see a total of 7 different camera shots
used. Only 7 shots are used in 27 seconds because its introducing the 3
different characters and there relationship between each other. We see a shot
reverse shot between Sarah and her daughter to show how the facial
expressions of each character when talking about the birthday party and how
close each of them are as mother and daughter. After the shot reverse shot
between Sarah and her daughter we see a 2 shot of Sarah and Paul, however
Paul in blurred out showing he is quite distant from what is happening
behind him. After the 2 shot we get a 6 second mid shot of Paul. However in
this shot we see that Paul really isn’t in the same place as his family, he is
clearly thinking of something else.
4. Fast Pacing
When the accident happens, we only see a couple of seconds of footage
due to the fast pace editing which give the audience plenty to figure out
what happened to who. The first shot we see is the copper pipes that fly
through the wind screen of the car. The second shot that the audience gets
to see is the pipes coming towards Paul and one stray pipe that goes
towards the back of the car. And finally the last shot of the pipe coming
through the head rest and the audience seeing the blood of Paul. This shot
lasts a little longer than the others, confirming the audiences suspicions.
The reason they decided to make it fast paced is because they want the
audience to feel like they’ve just experienced a car accident.
6. Computer Generated Images (CGI)
CGI has been the make or
break in the movie industry. In
the second clip of The Descent
CGI was used to replace the
copper piping that flew into the
family's car. CGI was the best
option in this case because real
pipes would cause damage to
the actors if it were actually to
happen. Therefore CGI is a
better and much safer option.
7. Transition
After the car accident the
camera cuts to a birds eye
view of the crash and is
slowly zooming out. This lets
the audience know that there
is about to be a pass in time
due to the fade to black. It
also leaves the audience to
speculate where the next
location of our actors will be.
