2. Introduction
Ashley
Within our group blog we had to deal with the areas of Research, Audience Research and
Planning. Within the planning we had to use our creativity to develop our ideas. An example of
how we did this is was by a task that we all completed which was to create mind maps of our
initial ideas and also to create a ‘mood board’ using PowerPoint where we added images which
represented and related our potential trailer. Within our research we had to use external factors
to improve our product and a task that Olivia carried out to do this is finding interviews from
films of the same genre as ours and this was to better our idea. The audience research consisted
of using our target audience and people from our school to voice their opinions on our products
and to give us ways that we can improve our idea and what we should keep the same. One of
the tasks I was given to carry out is to video people on their opinions on our treatment. The
areas will be spoken about specifically in the further slides. The aims of our group blog/portfolio
was to gain the highest mark we can and we will do this by successfully incorporating feedback
given to us to create a successful product (Magazine cover, Film poster and Film trailer).
4. Typical Conventions of Thriller Trailer
Thriller is a broad genre that invokes excitement and suspense in the intended audience. This is done through many ways.
Camera
Canted angles are commonly used as they make the audience feel confused and disorientated.
Extreme close-ups are also used to show the expression of characters such as fear, it creates a sense of terror because the audience can empathise with them.
Sound
The soundtrack for trailer films are essential in setting the right atmosphere of fear or suspense. Most trailers use instrumentals with no words and the song tends to build up and slowly
crescendos before going completely silent, then suddenly exploding with sound which tends to surprise the audience.
Voiceovers tend to be added and since the audience cant see the person behind the voice it heightens the mysterious element.
Editing
Slow editing and cuts that fade to black screen . Then the trailer begins to transition into faster editing like jump cuts to speed up the pace and heighten suspense.
Mis en scene
Props play an important role in thriller trailer as they let us know what is going to happen. If a weapon is seen then it indicates violence. Bible/Ouja Board = religion/ supernatural beings. Mirrors=
reflection, mainly as a comparison between what the protagonist used to be and who hey have become.
Narrative
main narrative is protagonist vs antagonist who is usually superior or supernatural.
The main character often doesn’t know what is going on for the first half of the film but later finds out.
5. Typical Conventions of Poster and
Magazine Cover
Danielle
Posters are essential because without them lot of people who have not seen the trailers would not know any
information about the film. Posters are usually placed on billboards, buses and bus stops. Teaser posters are
usually released before the main posters. Teaser posters don't have as much information and typically only
have the release date of the film. Main posters give more information like the names of the sponsors, crew and
the starring actors. From the poster, the audience can guess the genre of the film by the mise en scene they can
see. For example, if there are guns and cars, the audience can assume it will be an action film. If there is blood
and other weapons or a dilapidated house , then the audience can guess that it is a horror film. Film posters help
to draw the audience's attention to the film being promoted and makes them enquire about what is going on in
the scene. On a magazine cover the masthead will always be at the top. The model will be centred in the
middle making eye contact with the audience to draw their attention. Surrounding the model on either side
will be taglines about the content of the magazine. The typography must be bold and attractive so that it pulls
the audience’s attention. The magazine cover should not be too busy otherwise it can be seen as disorientating
and an eyesore. Magazines provide readers a way to find out what others thought of the film and their opinions
of it, also giving the readers a glimpse of what the film is about and whether or not they may like it. This is done
through reviews. The most commonly known review magazines would be 'EMPIRE' and 'ENTERTAINMENT
WEEKLY'. Some other film review magazines include 'SLANT', 'LITTLE WHITE LIES', and 'FILM COMMENT'.
Entertainment Weekly features articles on TV Shows, Movies and music so it has a wide target audience. It also
features interviews, reviews and sneak peeks (as shown in the Walking Dead cover image).
6. Brief of Trailer
Danielle
The trailer opens as a young man is sprinting through the woods. We can hear his heart racing,
twigs are snapping beneath his feet as he breaks through low hanging branches. Dr Casey begins
her session with Aaron, asking him what the problem is to which he responds with his
explanation of having blackouts that cause him temporary memory loss. This scene bridges to a
voiceover that plays throughout the whole trailer, where we hear what he has been going
through and the fear he has because of it. Through the remainder of the trailer we see Aaron
dividing his time between finding a cure for his blackouts and finding the murderer. Many
characters interact with Aaron throughout the trailer, his therapist Dr Casey, His friend Mia and
his co-worker Noah, are all under suspicion as potential suspects due to the fact that they are
not able to tell Aaron where they were on the night the murders occurred, thus allowing the
audience to question the enigmas of the storyline. Tension is built in the trailer as scenes are
shown of Aaron fighting his way through a gang of attackers and battling other obstacles. The
killer looks directly at the camera, dressed in all black, only the glow in the dark white mask he
wears can be seen. The trailer ends with Aaron holding a gun and shooting it at the camera,
leaving the audience questioning whether he was the killer all along.
8. Audience Research
Ashley
This is the area that I did the most activities on e.g videoing peoples responses, creating a
survey.
Audience video responses:
What I had to do was video peoples opinions on the treatment and get them to elaborate on
what they think was successful and what they think can be removed or added onto the
treatment
Surveys and summaries
I used survey monkey to email people within school and outside of school to complete around
10 questions. This was to ensure that I met the audiences needs to create a successful trailer.
9. Unique Selling Point
Danielle
The USP (unique selling point) of our trailer is that it does not instantly reveal that there is only
one villain but the possibility of multiple killers placing everyone around the main character
under suspicion. There is minimal dialogue in the trailer as the only speech is in the very
beginning between Aaron and Dr. Casey. The trailer features multiple shots of the other
characters in awkward circumstances that suggest they could be responsible for the murders.
The killer will not be revealed in the trailer leaving the audience wanting to see more.
10. Target Audience
Ashley
This print screen was taken from our treatment and it shows that what age group
we are trying to target our trailer to be aimed at. Go gain information on what
would appeal to our target audience we used our audience research, for example
by asking them to fill out surveys on survey monkey. This research was easy
conduct as it states that we have aimed it at a ‘wide range’ showing that we were
thinking realistically about the selection of our target audience.
11. Distribution Company
Danielle
After conducting research, the company that produces the most successful action thriller films is
Warner Bros. They have produced some major blockbuster films that share the same genre as
our film. Examples of films they have produced include the Harry Potter films, Inception
Sherlock Holmes, Annabelle series, Batman Begins, The Conjuring, and Zodiac. All of these films
have an element of mystery to them. They each vary in form. For example, Batman Begins
contains mystery throughout the film as to whether batman will defeat the villains, however, the
film is about a superhero. On the other hand, The Conjuring features elements that represent
the supernatural genre, such as the possessed doll. We feel that Warner Bros is the best
distribution company for us due to the genre and premise of our film.

14. Script
Ashley
The script was created by Olivia . We had to make sure that due to the fact that we are only
creating a trailer, we had to ensure that not too much dialogue was included and that we did it
in a way that engages the audience which is why the dialogue we are going to include has
important information but not give away the whole plot. As well as dialogue, voice overs will
also be used to add to the atmosphere of a trailer and keep the audience engaged.
The script/shot list included exact details of the dialogue, description of the shot , the camera
angle in the specific order that it will be filmed in and this was to ensure that we kept organised
in order for us to work effectively. The dialogue is also between two of the characters (Aaron
and the doctor.
15. Storyboard
Olivia
It's a guide line of what happens in a film sequence.
It gives direction and helps the cast to know what
exactly happens next. Storyboards are graphic
organizers in images displayed in a sequence in order
for pre- visualizing a motion picture, animation,
motion graphic or interactive media sequence.
