1. Language is ambiguous for many reasons. Some of the problems that lead misunderstanding
in language is that humans tend to rarely say exactly what is meant. There are five various problems
in everyday language, one of these which is ambiguity.
Certain phrases and slang terms may be thought of as ambiguous to someone else, as there is no
definite line between what is meant to be literal and what is meant to be abstract. For example, the
duchess cannot bear children” this example is ambiguous as there are two interpretations to it, one
is literal and the other is more abstract. The literal interpretation of this example is that the duchess
is unable to give birth to children, where as the second interpretation which is abstract could suggest
that the duchess dislike children.
Ambiguity of a sentence can be exploited to mislead people into believing things, this is generally
carried out by people persuading others to vote for them, buy their products, or steal their
information. However ambiguity can become clearer in the context of a larger passage or dialogue,
as it would be easier to understand the interpretation because there is a larger understanding of its
background.
