0hunger - no food waste, no hunger
1. 0Hunger no food waste, no hunger.
0Hunger eliminates food waste and hunger in the U.S. (eventually worldwide) through a grassroots
movement that would make the SF Food Runners every American town's norm. We’ll use trucks with
standardized (hot/cold/produce/etc.) bins for food pickups – just like paper and plastic recycling; and
promote our cause profitably through innovative services, application of technology, and leveraging
existing profit and nonprofit infrastructure dedicated to alleviating hunger – e.g. the Soup Kitchen.
Customer Needs: Everyday, approximately 45M low-income customers need to put food on the table.
Our medium/high-income customers want great food bargains/value.
Product/Services: We 1. Provide daily excess food pickup services for local restaurants, businesses,
supermarkets, and universities using standardized bins to achieve efficiency, safety, and scalability. 2.
Operate eateries that cook and serve meals, using excess food from pickup services, to value-conscious
consumers. 3. Deliver excess high-quality, ready-for-consumption food to customers with the highest
bids. 4. Deliver food to the needy through the local grassroots volunteer communities.
Target Market: The estimated TAM for our value-conscious consumers is $11.6B (2% of the $604B
of U.S. restaurant sales in 2011). With the U.S. hunger rate at a 15-yr high, this figure could be higher.
Customers: Value and social conscious consumers.
Business Model: We provide meals to value and social conscious consumers; and plow back 20% of
profit to investors, 40% to feeding the needy, and 40% for growth. To enhance profitability, we
leverage and reward volunteers with extensive programs such as internships for graduates from
institutions such as the Culinary Institute of America, Johnson and Wales, Cornell Hotel School, etc.
Sales/Marketing Strategy: Initially, we leverage online social networks to spread the word and seed
grassroots groups of volunteers throughout the U.S. Following our service launch, we’ll leverage our
restaurant, supermarket and business partners, and traditional PR means to further build up our brand.
Competitors: Many existing nonprofit/for-profit organizations provide food to the needy, e.g. the Soup
Kitchen. We welcome competition!
Advantage: Service standardization (bins for efficient, safe food pickups) and 0Hunger’s delivery
optimization technology will enable faster growth, higher customer satisfaction, profitability, and
efficiency in feeding the needy.
