APPROPRIATE LANGUAGE
 Choose your words carefully when you
write. Develop the habit of selecting words that are
precise and appropriate for your purpose. You
must avoid slang, cliches, pretentious words,
euphemism, jargon, redundancy, and wordiness.

 Identify the kind of inappropriate language used in the sentence
as to Cliché, Euphemism, Jargon, Slang, Redundancy

deprived.
4. Her extravagance brought her negative savings.

 The journalist wrote a persuading lead in his
article.

in class.
 The woman looked white as a ghost when she saw
the accident.

Cliche
 A cliche is an expression that has been worn out through
constant use. Although they are common in speech, they
make writing seem stale. You should avoid cliches and try
to express your meaning in original ways. Here are some
typical cliches:
short but sweet last but not least
work like a dog too little, too late
singing the blues easier said than done
on top of the world in the nick of time
make ends meet
Slang
 Informal word or expression that is not considered
standard and appropriate for formal occasions.
 These are words used in ordinary situations.
 Ex. My new friend is cool!
 I want to ride a limo.
 My sister is working as a QC Manager.
Euphemism
 A substitute for an expression that may
offend or suggest something offensive for
the receiver.
 Ex:
 Retarded for mentally challenged
 Janitor- sanitary engineer
 Poor- financially challenged
Redundancy/ wordiness
 Unnecessary repetition of words in expressing ideas
 Examples:
at the present time
