What is Media Studies?
 What are ‘the media’?
 The term ‘the media’ is an umbrella term for the industries of TV, film, newspapers,
magazines, internet, radio, videogames
 The word ‘media’ is the plural form of medium
 For example, TV is a medium of communication where a small group of people can
produce a TV programme that is watched by millions
 Britain’s Got Talent, Coronation Street, X-Factor – The media forms listed above are
mass media
 because they are intended to communicate with great numbers of people. It is these
mass media which are the focus of the academic subject of media studies at A-Level
and beyond
Types of Media
Print media
lightweight, portable, disposable publications printed on paper
Electronic media
media that use electronics or electromechanical energy for audience
New age media
electronic communication that involves the use of computer technology
Content type

Take Media Studies if you…
 Are interested in films, TV programmes, advertising, the news,
videogames, web design, blogging etc?
 Want to be able to think critically and analytically about the media you
interact with on a daily basis
 Are interested in producing your own media products.
 Are predicted at least Cs in five GCSE subjects?
Don’t take Media Studies if you think…
 It’s all about running around school with a camera.
 It’s easy. The practical element is 50%…that means 50% is
written theory.
 I won’t have to do much writing…ideally you should have
at leasta C in English in order to cope with the written
essays.

 Due to Media, people in foreign countries are constrained to think
that Pakistan is full of ill-culturedand fraudulent people.
 Responsibility of Media should be to broadcast the right news
without crushing the image of the nation.
Sensationalism
Breaking news of News channels is incomplete without sensations
The already frightened nation of the country gets even more
frightened when bomb blasts are sensationalized by showing dead
bodies of people and the dramatic background music
Religious Impression
Media is nowadays going against the Islamic teachings.
Open Issues are being discussed which should not be openly discussed
Media is spreading vulgarity
Westernization
 European and American culture
is slowly engulfing our society.
Extensive promotion of western
product brands
 Effect on local values and trends
 Language changes
 Change in meal preferences
Effect on Minds Of Children
 Media has harmfully affected the minds of children
 Children are exposed to things that they should not
necessarily be exposed to yet
 Media sell their own value system to the kids through
actors, cartoon characters, and even musicians who are
puppets

•According to the report, internet users in Pakistan
stood at 76.38 million in 2020, increasing by 11
million (17%) from 2019. Overall internet penetration
was 35% in January 2020.
