3. INTRODUCTION
RAM (Random Access Memory) is the hardware in a
computing device where the operating system (OS), application
programs and data in current use are kept so they can be
quickly reached by the device's processor. RAM is the main
memory in a computer. It is much faster to read from and write
to than other kinds of storage, such as a hard disk drive (HDD),
solid-state drive (SSD) or optical drive.
4. WHAT IS RAM?
Computer random access memory (RAM) is one of the
most important components in determining your system’s
performance. RAM gives applications a place to store and
access data on a short-term basis. It stores the information your
computer is actively using so that it can be accessed quickly.
5. TYPES OF RAM
1. Dynamic RAM (DRAM)
2. Static RAM (SDRAM)
• DRAM(pronounced DEE-RAM),is widely used as a computer ‘s main memory. Each DRAM
memory cell is made up of a transistor and a capacitor within an integrated circuit , and a data bit
is stored in capacitor .
• SDRAM(pronounced ES-RAM)is made up of four to six transistor .It keeps data in the memory
as long as power is supplied to the system unlike DRAM, which has to be refreshed periodically.
6. FUNCTION OF RAM
• Because of its volatility, RAM can't store permanent data. RAM can be compared to a
person's short-term memory, and a hard disk drive to a person's long-term memory. Short-term
memory is focused on immediate work, but it can only keep a limited number of facts in view at
any one time. When a person's short-term memory fills up, it can be refreshed with facts stored
in the brain's long-term memory.
7. WORKING OF RAM
RAM is the working memory of any computer, instead of a regular SSD
memory, because RAM is extremely fast.
A memory chip or RAM is an integrated circuit made of millions of
capacitors and transistors.
In today’s advanced RAMs a transistor and capacitor are paired together to
create a memory cell.
8. ADVANTAGES OF RAM
Today the speed with which we are able to work on our computer or mobile has been possible
due to RAM.
RAM is very power efficient, and it consumes very less power.
RAM does not have any moving part, so the chances of its deterioration are very low, and it
does not make any sound whatsoever.
9. DISADVANTAGES OF RAM
In case of power cut due to any reason, all the data on the RAM gets deleted, which can be very
difficult at times.
By the way, RAM is not usually messed up, but if it ever gets damaged then it is almost
impossible to repair it, and we have to replace it.
10. CONCLUSION
• The amounts of RAM matters more than the types of RAM. This is because more the RAM
available in a system, more number of tasks can be performed simultaneously without any
performance drop.
