3. Goals and Obstacles
• Character goals is locating treasure, foster parent or looking for love.
• Character obstacles is collision of goals and obstacles which creates conflict
and thus drama.
4. CharacterTraits
• CharacterTraits is building a personality of a character / what we get shown
and how it changes throughout the film.
• For example in the film ‘Shutter Island’ the main characterTeddy Daniels is
very professional at the beginning but at the end he stays professional until
his get the answer he came looking for, he then turns into a patient at the
asylum as he knows what had happened and finally accepted it.
5. Character Choices
• Character choice is when the character creates cause and effect through
choices that soon enough lead to conflict and consequences.
6. Conflict
There are many different types of conflict in films.
• Inner Conflict- Within the character, concerned with self esteem, insecurities or
uncertainties.
• Situational Conflict-Develops as a result of a certain situation.
• Relational Conflict-Conflict between characters over goals and how to achieve the
goals.
• Cosmic Conflict-Between the main character and a supernatural force.
• Societal Conflict- Between a person and a group.The group could be a gang,
family, government or country.
7. Example of conflict in Suicide Squad
• Inner Conflict-Diablo, he is self consciences about his powers.
• Situational Conflict-Boss trapped in a building so the Suicide Squad go to
rescue her.
• Relational Conflict-Deadshot and the boss as she wants Deadshot to shoot
Harley-Quinn but he won’t do it.
• Cosmic Conflict-The Suicide Squad vs Enchantress in the end battle.
• Societal Conflict-The whole Suicide Squad vs the boss.
8. Diegetic vs Nondiegetic elements
• Diegetic-Everything that exists in the world- settings, sounds, characters
and effects.
• Nondiegetic-Elements within the film- credits, music and voice-over
narration.
