Narrative form is structure though which movie tells a story e.g. (flashbacks)
•narrative through media; novels, plays, comic books, commercials.
•most common in fiction films but appear in all basic films.
•occur in space and time
•doesn't unfold randomly, but rather ordered series of events connected by the logic of cause and
effect
•this logic of cause and effect ties together character traits, goals, obstacles and actions
beauty and the beast narrative structure
1.father gets captured by the beast
2.belle goes to the castle to save her father
3.the beast keeps belle captive in the castle (rising acton)
4.belle meets the enchanted objects
5.the beast falls in love with belle (climax)
6.belle misses her father and the beast lets her go
7.belle gets attacked and beast saves her
8.belle leaves the castle, goes to the beast to warn of gaston coming to kill him
9.gaston and others go to the castle to kill the beast
10.gaston is killed by the beast and the beast becomes the prince
11.belle and prince get together.
3. three act structure
3 parts to a narrative
•introduction (setup)
•rising action (stakes get higher,confrontation)
•falling action (crisis,resolution)
structure:
•set up/ exposition- meeting the characters, establishing the setting,
setting the tone
•rising action- central conflict is introduced and the tension between the
protagonist and the antagonist begins to mount, many events will
happen stakes get higher
•climax- turning point, makes a change and better or worse, protagonist
future
•falling action- major action has happened, this is the aftermath, sorting
out the major conflict resolution.
•denouement/resolution- creation of the new normal, conflict resolved.

the theory:
•A state of equilibrium (as it all should be)
•a disruption of that order by an event
•A recognition that the disorder has occurred
•an attempt to repair the damage
•a return or restoration of a new equilibrium

•begins with one situation (exposition)
•series of changes occurs according to a
pattern of cause and effect
•finally a new situation aries
•the new story equilibrium almost always
results in character change
6. characters
•narrative film generally focus on human characteristics and there struggle
•characters are typically responsible for cause and effect in narrative.
flat: minor characters, who do not go through any substantial change
throughout the story or have much substance to them
round: more fully developed characters who may experience a change
during the story
developing characters:
1.through conversations with other characters
2.how do writers develop round, dynamic characters?
3.through group associations
4.through direct description of that character
5.through reactions to conflict
