 Service - The application of knowledge, skills and resources by
one entity to co-create value for the benefit of another entitiy
 Service System - dynamic configurations of resources (people,
technology, organizations and shared information) that can co-
create benefits for individuals, businesses and society
 Service Science – Study of Service Systems
 Service Innovation - Rapidly and globally scaling the benefits
of new combinations of technology, business model, and/or
organizational knowledge to improve existing or create new
types of service and service systems

diabetes
 Initially invitation email went to ~40,000
Harvard community in 2010
 Reached to more than 250,000 invitees
 Results:
- 150 research ideas generated
- 12 winners
- Today 7 teams of multidisciplinary researchers
are working on the resulting potential
breakthrough ideas.

All rights reserved. 9 Open Innovation: Harvard Medical School  Grand Challenge: ~ $200M  Goal: Generate research topic in Type I diabetes  Initially invitation email went to ~40,000 Harvard community in 2010  Reached to more than 250,000 invitees  Results: - 150 research ideas generated - 12 winners - Today 7 teams of multidisciplinary researchers are working on the resulting potential breakthrough ideas.
