  • MACME is a Wordpress plugin created by FakePress and released under a GPL3 license. It turns any Wordpress blog (currently supports up to Wordpress version 3.0.5) into a cross-medial publishing system. This means that users are able to insert multimedia content into their blog and MACME tools allow this content to be accessible in formats that are suitable for publishing on paper, spaces, objects, locations, architectures.
  • Different kind of media assets can be added to a Wordpress blog using MACME. From standard media formats already available in the Wordpress platform (such as images, audio and video), to other ones, including geographical coordinates and addresses, 3D objects. MACME also allows connecting (realtime, live) data sources to the system. Google and Flickr can be connected (with out-of-the-box functionality) to provide sources of self updating information. A convenient open API can be used to connect other sources of information to the system, and to create infoaesthetic representations for them. All content in the Wordpress blog can be rendered in realtime to various media: on mobile phones, maps, and using QRCodes and Augmented Reality fiducial markers, to attach content and information to objects, physical spaces, places, bodies, clothes....)
  • MACME is designed with ease of use and accessibility in mind. The software has been developed as a Wordpress plugin to instantly enable millions of people to the opportunities offered by free, accessible open tools for cross-medial publishing. The software is also designed to easily pull out parts and functionalities from it, to adapt them to other platforms. The GPL3 licensing schemes allows anyone to do this, and we at FakePress are really happy if you do so. We only suggest anyone creating derivates of the software to inform the community around MACME, so that people can benefit from the new versions or supported platforms. A good place to communicate updates and news is the github project for MACME: https://github.com/xdxdVSxdxd/MACME
  • In the next few slides you will find some scenarios that use MACME and other tools by FakePress. Please do let us know if you create additional usage scenarios: we will be more than happy to publicize them and the community will appreciate the sharing of this information. You can contact us at this email address: [email_address] Or directly at the GITHUB project form MACME.
  • The REFF book http://www.romaeuropa.org was created using MACME. The italian publishing house DeriveApprodi published the paper version of it starting from the XHTML version generated by MACME. A paper publication produced using MACME can include videos, audio, maps, interactive experiences, infoaesthetic information visualizations directly from the pages of the publication, by using QRCodes and AR markers directly generated from MACME. Markers can also be printed out on stickers and onto other materials to add digital content to any object or location.
  • MACME content produced on Wordpress can be printed out on QRCodes and Augmented Reality markers. These markers can be printed on stickers to fill entire places, cities and urban locations with content, videos, documentation. Content are accessible using location based web (and mobile web) interfaces produceable directly using MACME (using shortcodes that can be directly added to Wordpress pages and interfaces). MACME also includes 2 ready to use and personalize development environments that can be used to compile applications for iPhone/iPad and Android phones (using the XCODE environment from Apple and Eclipse environment+Android SDK ): these applications directly connect to the MACME system installed on your Wordpress blog and allow people to browse your content directly from the places they traverse.
  • The QRCodes and Augmented Reality markers can be attached to objects to transform them into information filled natural interfaces. For example one of FakePress' publications, the AR Fluxus Box, was produced this way: http://www.flickr.com/photos/xdxd_vs_xdxd/sets/72157625600933902/
  • Other technologies such as the Bluetooth Wars http://www.artisopensource.net/2009/12/01/bluetooth-wars-ahacktitude-2009/ Allow transforming a laptop into an ubiquitous multimedia broadcast station.

    1. 1. MACME Multi Author Cross Media Ecosystem
    2. 2. TEXT AUDIO VIDEO 3D IMAGES COORDINATES REALTIME DATA DATABASES WEB MOBILE APP QRCodes AUGMENTED REALITY LOCATION BASED MEDIA PAPER PUBLICATIONS
    3. 3. MULTIPLE AUTHORS can produce CROSS MEDIA CONTENT and EASILY DISSEMINATE IT ON MULTIPLE CHANNELS
    4. 4. SOME SCENARIOS
    5. 5. PAPER PUBLICATION (ex.: book, magazine...) Using MACME paper publication goes on ePub (ebook readers), PDF (printing, browsing), and XHTML (for further layout on XPRESS, InDesign, Scribus...) Your book/magazine can include, directly on paper: VIDEOS, SOUNDS, INTERACTIVE MAPS, INFOAESTHETIC REPRESENTATIONS, LIVE DATABASES, SOCIAL NETWORK AGGREGATION, REALTIME INTERACTION cross media content is generated on paper automatically by MACME under the form of QRCODES and Augmented Reality Markers
    6. 6. EXAMPLE REFF BOOK A book of a fake institution in Italy: multiple authors engage the possibility to reinvent reality through a “fake”. The MACME platform is created and is used to assemble the book, disseminating information about alternative cultural policies, critical practices and the opportunities for autonomous reinvention of reality http://www.romaeuropa.org
    7. 7. DISSEMINATE INFORMATION GEOGRAPHICALLY Information can be disseminated across spaces, architectures, cities. MACME can be used to: create MAPS that are accessible by web/mobile and directly in places using STICKERS WITH QRCODES AUGMENTED REALITY
    8. 8. EXAMPLE UBIQUITOUS BORORO Together with prof. Massimo Canevacci, an Augmented Reality system is used with the Bororo population living in Mato Grosso, Brazil. The system was used as an experiment to go beyond Anthropological writing, creating an environment in which multiple voices autonomously express. UBIQUITOUS BORORO has been used to represent the political claims of the Bororo population by completely covering the governmental buildings in Brasilia with QRCodes and Augmented Reality. http://www.fakepress.it
    9. 9. OBJECTS AND BODIES CAN BECOME VECTORS OF INFORMATION QRCODES and AUGMENTED REALITY MARKERS can be used to transform objects, clothes and other things into instruments for information and interaction .
    10. 10. EXAMPLE REFF AR DRUG An Augmented Reality Drug is produced by FakePress under the form of a fake pill box. The drug contains extensive Information about critical technological practices that can be used to promote free and autonomous forms of expression and information. The information is produced by creating QRCodes using the MACME platform and creating a box of medicine as a “cure” for society. The pill box has been disseminated in dozens of supermarkets In multiple cities using shopdropping techniques. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SXaoPPkpqUo
    11. 11. BECOME AN UBIQUITOUS MEDIA BROADCASTING STATION AUTONOMOUSLY DISSEMINATE MEDIA ALL AROUND YOU USING WIRELESS-BASED TECHNOLOGIES.
    12. 12. EXAMPLE BLUETOOTH WARS A live Linux distribution designed to be put into a backpack, transforming you into a mobile multimedia broadcasting station with legs. Transmit media in realtime to the people around you, on their mobile phones, at 10-100 meters radius. Or collaborate with other people forming media barricades (10 people = 1 linear km of autonomous multimedia broadcasting, filling entire urban areas). Or leave your laptop with Bluetooth Wars inside a car parked in a strategic location and you immediately have a tactical media broadcasting station. http://www.slideshare.net/xdxd/bluetooth-wars
    13. 13. REMIX THE WORLD! REINVENT REALITY! THE WORLD IS ENCODED AND ENCODING THE WORLD (SPACE, TIME, ACTIVITIES, PRACTICES, ROLES, GENDERS...) IS THE MAIN TOOL TO ENACT POWER. THESE TECHNOLOGIES AND PRACTICES ALLOW FOR CREATION OF ADDITIONAL LAYERS OF INFORMATION ON “ORDINARY” REALITY . THESE TECHNOLOGIES ARE PROGRESSIVELY BEING USED IN THE MIGRATION OF HUMANITY INTO THE HYBRID SPACE/TIME THAT SITS ACROSS OUR ANALOG AND DIGITAL LIVES . OUR RELATIONSHIPS, CITIZENSHIPS, ECONOMIES, POLITICS AND ACTIVITIES PROGRESSIVELY SHIFT TO NETWORKED PRACTICES, AND NETWORKS EXIT COMPUTER SCREENS AND FLUIDLY MERGE TO THE WORLD. APPROPRIATING THESE TECHNOLOGIES , WITH OPEN, FREE, ACCESSIBLE, AUTONOMOUS SOFTWARE, HARDWARE AND PRACTICES IS A KEY FACTOR FOR OUR FREEDOMS OF EXPRESSION AND INTERPRETATION OF THE WORLD, AND TO ENACT OUR NARRATIVES ON SPACES, TIMES, BODIES .
    14. 14. NEXT STEPS
    15. 15. FakePress FakePress is promoting free, open and accessible platforms for ubiquitous communication, enabling the creation of new, autonomous practices that can be used to write on the world. Promotion takes place by enacting education practices and by providing free technological infrastructures for critical, tactical, ubiquitous communication and information.
    16. 16. NOW! workshops, support, technological scenarios collaboration practices to invent new forms of ubiquitous information and communication re-appropriation of technologies, media, formats and practices creation of internationally coordinated events in which movements learn how to use these technologies and make urban performances
    17. 17. NOW! we are creating the initial set of workshops we are creating a first event (for now: Rome, Milan, London) we are distributing software and sharing knowledge. we are supporting people in the creation of new languages, grammars, possibilities
