Editor's Notes

  1. MACME is a Wordpress plugin created by FakePress and released under a GPL3 license. It turns any Wordpress blog (currently supports up to Wordpress version 3.0.5) into a cross-medial publishing system. This means that users are able to insert multimedia content into their blog and MACME tools allow this content to be accessible in formats that are suitable for publishing on paper, spaces, objects, locations, architectures.
  2. Different kind of media assets can be added to a Wordpress blog using MACME. From standard media formats already available in the Wordpress platform (such as images, audio and video), to other ones, including geographical coordinates and addresses, 3D objects. MACME also allows connecting (realtime, live) data sources to the system. Google and Flickr can be connected (with out-of-the-box functionality) to provide sources of self updating information. A convenient open API can be used to connect other sources of information to the system, and to create infoaesthetic representations for them. All content in the Wordpress blog can be rendered in realtime to various media: on mobile phones, maps, and using QRCodes and Augmented Reality fiducial markers, to attach content and information to objects, physical spaces, places, bodies, clothes....)
  3. MACME is designed with ease of use and accessibility in mind. The software has been developed as a Wordpress plugin to instantly enable millions of people to the opportunities offered by free, accessible open tools for cross-medial publishing. The software is also designed to easily pull out parts and functionalities from it, to adapt them to other platforms. The GPL3 licensing schemes allows anyone to do this, and we at FakePress are really happy if you do so. We only suggest anyone creating derivates of the software to inform the community around MACME, so that people can benefit from the new versions or supported platforms. A good place to communicate updates and news is the github project for MACME: https://github.com/xdxdVSxdxd/MACME
  4. In the next few slides you will find some scenarios that use MACME and other tools by FakePress. Please do let us know if you create additional usage scenarios: we will be more than happy to publicize them and the community will appreciate the sharing of this information. You can contact us at this email address: [email_address] Or directly at the GITHUB project form MACME.
  5. The REFF book http://www.romaeuropa.org was created using MACME. The italian publishing house DeriveApprodi published the paper version of it starting from the XHTML version generated by MACME. A paper publication produced using MACME can include videos, audio, maps, interactive experiences, infoaesthetic information visualizations directly from the pages of the publication, by using QRCodes and AR markers directly generated from MACME. Markers can also be printed out on stickers and onto other materials to add digital content to any object or location.
  6. MACME content produced on Wordpress can be printed out on QRCodes and Augmented Reality markers. These markers can be printed on stickers to fill entire places, cities and urban locations with content, videos, documentation. Content are accessible using location based web (and mobile web) interfaces produceable directly using MACME (using shortcodes that can be directly added to Wordpress pages and interfaces). MACME also includes 2 ready to use and personalize development environments that can be used to compile applications for iPhone/iPad and Android phones (using the XCODE environment from Apple and Eclipse environment+Android SDK ): these applications directly connect to the MACME system installed on your Wordpress blog and allow people to browse your content directly from the places they traverse.
  7. The QRCodes and Augmented Reality markers can be attached to objects to transform them into information filled natural interfaces. For example one of FakePress' publications, the AR Fluxus Box, was produced this way: http://www.flickr.com/photos/xdxd_vs_xdxd/sets/72157625600933902/
  8. Other technologies such as the Bluetooth Wars http://www.artisopensource.net/2009/12/01/bluetooth-wars-ahacktitude-2009/ Allow transforming a laptop into an ubiquitous multimedia broadcast station.
