2. Energy
• Energy is the ability to do work!
• Energy canNOT be created or destroyed
• Instead it changes from one form to another
• We get energy from nonrenewable and
renewable energy sources
• Renewable means it can be replaced
• Nonrenewable means it canNOT be easily
replaced.
3. Nonrenewable energy
sources
• Comes from nonrenewable sources like fossil
fuels (coal, natural gas and oil)
• Burning of fossil fuels for energy produces a
lot of air pollution
• Air pollution increases the chance of global
warming
• Air pollution increases the chance of acid rain
4. Nuclear Energy
• A nonrenewable energy source
• It is nonrenewable because it needs an
element like Uranium which is not easily
replaced
• Produces less air pollution than fossil fuels, but
produces heat pollution in lakes
• Nuclear energy occurs when the nucleus of an
Uranium is split through the process of fission
5. Renewable Energy
• Comes from renewable sources like the sun &
wind
• Renewable energy types are:
• Solar (from the sun)
• Wind
• Geothermal (from the heat within the Earth)
• Biomass (from plant material and animal waste)
• Hydroelectric (from the water)
6. Conserving Energy
• We want to conserve energy
• So that we don’t run out of the nonrenewable
sources
• So that it cuts down on our electric bill
• Ways we can conserve:
• Turn off lights when we aren’t in a room
• Turn off appliances and electronics when we aren’t
using them
• Change our light bulbs to the compact fluorescent
bulbs
