The document outlines Natasha House's group's plans for creating a radio news bulletin targeted at 16-27 year olds on the Isle of Wight, including choosing a name of "Channel X" and conducting a questionnaire of their target audience to determine their interests. The group discusses the structure of their 5 minute news bulletin, including including a hard news story, a traffic/weather report, and two other news stories they have gathered about local events.
2. INTRODUCTION
In class we are planning a radio news bulletin for radio’s that we are creating ourselves. I am in a group of 3
people so we all have individual tasks to help create this radio news bulletins as well as working together. It will
include a name, strapline and a 3-5 minute news bulletin including clips and a news reporter. Our aim is to lure
in our chosen target audience and be the best known hit music station.
Firstly, we came up with several radio names that would appeal to our target audience and have the right
connotations, etc. Here is the list we came up with:
Channel X
Infinity Radio
The pulse
Black Rhythm
More Music FM
Forever Radio
3. CHANNEL X
Our chosen radio station name is ‘Channel X’ which runs on the strapline of ‘Channel in,
Channel X’ which highlights the name of our radio station in the strapline. It is quite catchy,
short and snappy which is a main advantage as a lot of people are going to remember it. We
chose this name because Channel X is quite mysterious and doesn’t actually highlight what
they are about which is linked to teenagers as they do their own thing and no one knows
what they’re up too.
The radio station is a locally broadcasted radio station which is aimed at the Isle of Wight
for 16-27 year olds which is a good age gap as most people this age like the same music,
news, etc.
4. TARGET AUDIENCE
We created a questionnaire to determine what our target audience are interested in and what they would like to listen
too. Here are the questionnaire results:

6. SUMMARY
Overall we asked 9 questions and gave out to 13 people who are the age of our target audience. The
questionnaire results weren’t surprising as the majority voted for the same thing and personally I would of
picked as well. 50% said they listen to the radio everyday showing that we need to make it interesting for
the audience to keep listening and 41% said they listen to the radio in the car which means in our radio
news bulletin we need to include information that the audience need to know for example Traffic updates
and Weather reports.
69% said they don’t mind who presents the radio news so it would be fair if we used two presenters of both
genders and didn’t seem sexist as both genders would play a crucial part e.g a female could read out the
important but negative news headlines and a male could read the sports and light-hearted stories or vice
versa.
7. STRUCTURE
For our 5 minute news bulletin we don’t want it all to be depressing news as that would become boring for our target
audience so we are going to include several things that are also important and what the audience need to know for
example Weather and Sport news.
From our questionnaire results we can determine what are target audience like listening too, where they are most
likely to listen too it and what they want to know. For example 41% said they listen to the radio in the car this is a
key point we need to take into consideration.
As it is 5 minutes it is important for the audience to know what is going on so hard news is a crucial story that will
probably be mentioned first that will last around 2 minutes and include a piece of audio (possibly cue and Voicer
depending on the news story).
8. NEWSGATHERING – STORY 1
Teenager arrested after Newport assault
A TEENAGER was arrested after Isle of Wight police were called to reports of an assault outside
McDonalds in Newport last night (Tuesday).
A police spokeswoman said that when officers arrived at the scene, in St James' Street, they found a 16-year-old
girl on the floor.
She was being treated by an off-duty doctor and was taken to St Mary's Hospital by ambulance, complaining of
neck pain.
The incident took place between 9.15pm and 9.30pm.
Another 16-year-old girl was arrested by police and street-bailed to attend the police station at a later date with an
adult.
9. NEWSGATHERING – STORY 2
Driver’s dual carriageway wrong turn caught on camera
ISLANDERS looked on in shock as a car turned the wrong way down the dual carriageway yesterday
(Tuesday).
The episode was caught on camera by Paul Hewson, who posted the footage on Facebook with the title 'anything
wrong here?'
It has been viewed almost 50,000 times.
Paul posted: "I think everyone who saw it happening could not believe their eyes. Luckily there was no one behind
me and he escaped back down the slip road."
The Isle of Wight County Press has contacted Hampshire Police for a response.
10. SCRIPTING
