2. Introduction
In class our group have been planning a script for our 5 minute
radio news bulletin. In this powerpoint there is a draft of the
stories and what the reporter will say in the actual bulletin.
3. Story 1
(Story 1) Reporter: On Monday the Isle of Wight festival organizer 'John Giddings'
payed tribute to 69 year old, pop legend, David Bowie. Who died on the 10th after a
long battle with cancer. The artist first performed in 1965 at Ventnor on the Isle of
Wight and he returned in 2004 a household name, performing in Newport, Seaclose
park. The Isle of Wight organizer said:
"David Bowie was such an influence on many. It is hard to find a band these days which
have not been influenced by him in some way"
4. Story 2
(Story 2) Reporter: On Wednesday a young man was arrested for attempting to rob a
jewellers with a large kitchen knife. A witness said the youth was brought to the
ground outside Sandown jewellers, in the high street, after attempting to rob the shop
while carrying what appeared to be a nine-inch kitchen knife.
"I was driving along the high street and saw a van driver jump out and i ran over to help
another man with holding down a youth on the ground. I parked and went over to see if
I could help,l but they were ok"
The store said no-one was injured during the incident. Police have confirmed that a
17-year-old boy named Levi Bellamy has been arrested.
5. Story 3
(Story 3) Reporter: Police closed part of Pyle street in Newport last Wednesday
evening after a man was tasered following a domestic incident involving a stabbing.
The man had started smashing glass and becoming aggressive after receiving a stab
wound to the abdomen, he was then tasered by officers at 61 Pyle street, behind
BHS. Emergency services were called to the scene shortly after 17:00 Hampshire
Constabulary arrested the man in his 40's on suspicion of causing criminal damage
and he has been taken to St Mary's Hospital. Thankfully no one was seriously
injured.
6. Story 4
(Story 4) Reporter: Several arrests were made by police Tuesday night following a
serious assault on a young teenage girl outside McDonalds in Newport. Officers were
called to the scene at around 20 past 9 after the 16 year old female was assaulted by
a group of youths. The girl was knocked unconscious in the incident after being
kicked in the head. Paramedics from the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service rushed to
the scene and conveyed the teen to St Mary's Hospital. Meanwhile at least 2 people
were arrested on suspicion of assault. Hampshire Constabulary have confirmed that a
16-year-old girl has been arrested with regards to the assault and is due to attend
Newport Police station with an adult.
7. Story 5
(Story 5) Reporter: Islanders looked on in shock as a car turned the wrong way down the
dual carriageway yesterday (Tuesday). The episode was caught on camera by Paul
Hewson, who posted the footage on Facebook with the title 'anything wrong here?'. It
has been viewed almost 50,000 times. Paul posted:
"I think everyone who saw it happening could not believe their eyes. Luckily there was no
one behind me and he escaped back down the slip road".
8. Story 6
(Story 6) Reporter: It was a day rife with red cards in the Sydenhams Premier
Division-and Lymington town's game at Folland sports was no exception. Three
players got their marching orders in Lymo's 2-1 victory in Hamble- Elliot Richards
and Rory Wood for the rock-bottom Planemakers and Brad Strickland for the
visitors. With four seeing red at Alresford and another three getting an early bath at
Verwood, Lymo boss John Pyatt can't help but think referees are overly keen to dish
the cards out.
9. Story 7
(Story 7) Reporter: There will be a little frost in the morning with a temperature as low
as -2 degrees, but will be clear for the afternoon with sunny spells and a little cloud.
For tonight we are expecting a low of 3 degrees and highs of 7.
10. Why we chose these stories?
Most news bulletin stories start with hard news to grab the audiences
attention, our stories are linked to our chosen target audience and what we
think they would like to know. We also chose this order because it ranks in
which stories we think are most important and what the audience should know
to soft light-hearted stories to make the overall news report not too depressing
as well as telling the audience what they need to know for example weather
and sport stories.
11. Who wrote the stories?
There are three people in our group including me. Sammy
(http://samgreenwood.blogspot.co.uk/) wrote the majority of the stories and I wrote
the sport and weather as our soft, light-hearted news stories. We decided to make
seven stories (five of which are the major ones) which was influenced by our research
as we want to know what are target audience like the most. We wanted to make our
stories quick but clear so it does not take to long to present them.
12. Rules of writing
When writing the script we made sure we linked it to our research so to
make sure our stories sounded suitable for our news bulletin we used the
‘rules of writing for a radio news bulletin’ to help us achieve this.
For example a main rule we used in all our hard news stories was rule 2 –
who, what, when, where and why as well as how this is used for most
story writing skills.
