1. 1. The Matterhorn Andrew Henderson Sean Watts
 2. 2. The Matterhorn

The Matterhorn is the 5 th highest mountain in The Alps. At the height of 4,478m.

It is divided between Swiss and Italian Borders.

It is said to be one of the Hardest climbs in the alps.

Matterhorn is translated to Meadow (matter) and peak (horn).

 3. 3. What is an extreme environment?

An extreme environment can be any environment that’s different from life in the city, and can include; Mountains, Deserts, The Arctic and anything else that is extreme, maybe even other planets!

It is possible to live in some extreme environments, and many people do! Small villages and communities live in mountains, but it is almost impossible to live a normal life in the arctic or the desert because of food, water and environment, because it can be so cold or so hot in places that you wont survive properly.

 4. 4. Height

Standing at 4,478 meters above sea level, the height plays a big part of the climate. Because of its height the Mountain is prone to abrupt weather changes.

And its Isolated position makes banner clouds an often occurrence.

 5. 5. Climate Climate in the Matterhorn is the same as in the alps, when you are over 3000 meters ( known as the névé zone) there is constantly snow throughout every season of the year. Once you get down to between 2000 and 3000 meters high then you will see flowers and grass because it’s not as cold as the névé zone. This is called the Alpine zone. Once you are underneath the alpine zone, and into the subalpine zone you’ll see a lot more vegetation, such as trees. Underneath that zone it’s bearable for humans and animals and a lot of farming takes place.
 6. 6. Matterhorn Population

The Matterhorn has many surrounding villages. The Biggest of which is Zermatt. Zermatt contains many hostels for climbers. It is also is the main base for cable cars up to the base of the Matterhorn. The climate is very cool 18.9 degrees centigrade at the hottest point of the year. At the coldest point the temperature goes down to -8.4 degrees centigrade.

 7. 7. Tourism

The Matterhorn was little known until 1865 when Edward Whymper completed the First recorded ascent only to have the majority of his team killed on the decent. This caused a rush of people to come to the Matterhorn. Now there are two resorts and a railway line used by climbers and Skiers.
