  3. 3. DEVELOPMENT AND PROMOTION OF DEMOCRATIC CITIZENSHIP IS THE PRIMARY CONCERN OF EDUCATION IN A DEMOCRACY. HENCE A STUDY OF THE RELATION BETWEEN DEMOCRACY AND EDUCATION WOULD BE OF SPECIAL INTEREST FOR THE PERSPECTIVE TEACHER.
  4. 4.  ACCORDING TO FRANKLIN D. ROODVELT “ DEMOCRACY CAN NOT SUCCEED UNLESS THOSE WHO EXPRESS THEIR CHOICE ARE PREPARED TO CHOOSE WISELY. THE REAL SAFEGUARD OF DEMOCRACY, THEREFORE
  5. 5.  DEMOCRACY is derived from two Greek words ‘DEMOS’ and ‘KRATIA’ which means People and Power respectively.  DEMOCRACY – POWER OF THE PEOPLE  DEMOCRACY – “ the government of the People, by the People and for the People.
  6. 6.  Emphasizes the worth and dignity of the individual and declares that every human being is to be considered as an end not as a mean.  “Sovereignty of the living individual” projects the human individual as the ‘ unit of judgment and responsible action’.
  7. 7.  Equal right is guaranteed to all.  Political and Social liberties are considered as the only dependable safeguards of individual worth and equality.  Democracy rests on individual opportunity and individual responsibility.
  8. 8. Let us Summarize…. JUSTICE LIBERTY EQUALITY FRATERNITY The concept of Democracy has undergone considerable changes through the ages, the core of the matter remains unchanged as seen in the struggle of man for justice, liberty, equality and fraternity.

Conclusion • Democracy has been accepted as a Philosophy of modern life. • Since Education is a potential instrument for social changes leading to modernization it has to maintain close relationship with that philosophy. IN ORDER TO GET EDUCATION, DEMOCRACY IS NECESSARY. ALSO TO UNDERSTAND THE MEANING AND APPLICATIONS OF DEMOCRACY, EDUCATION IS ESSENTIAL.
  10. 10. • GANDHIJI says “ By education, I mean an all-round development of the best in child and man - body, mind and spirit. • Man is a social being. The society will be developed and modified through each individual by education. • Democracy and Education plays a vital role in order to achieve these goals.
