 Background information
 Conduct geographic research with consultation
Level 1: Carry out and present
 directed geographic research

What it means:
We tell you what to collect
We tell you the research questions
We tell you how to present it

How does this AS differ across
the Levels?
Carry out and present guided
 geographic research

What it means:
We tell you the research questions
We tell you how you can collect it
You sort out how to present your
 information

Level 2
Conduct geographic research with
 consultation
What it means:
You sort out your research questions
You decide how you will collect data
You decide how you will present the
 information
Consultation means the teacher cannot
tell you what to do – however you can ask
 the teacher questions.

Level 3
What are the Criteria?
There is only one :

Conduct comprehensive geographic
 research with consultation.
. Conduct geographic research with consultation
  involves:
 • identifying the aim of the research
 • planning the research
 • collecting and recording data relevant to the
  aim of the research
 • presenting a map(s) and statistical and/or
  visual data
 • analysing findings
 • providing a conclusion(s) that relates to the
  aim of the research
 • providing an evaluation of the research
process, and how this affects the validity of the
  research findings.
Carry out geographic research with
consultation means ;
Select and discuss geographic
concepts relevant to the research
topic and /or findings

Apply two of the KGCs to your research
 topic and/or findings somewhere.

Do you remember the KGCs?
Be clear that you must relate it to your
research not just beaches / Muriwai / St
 Leonard's.
• critically analysing findings – how good
 or bad were they
• critically evaluating the research process
by building on the detailed evaluation of
the process through a discussion of
 alternative research methods and their
 implications.

Evaluate the research process
and/or findings
The criteria has different needs for each
achievement level:
ACHIEVEMENT MERIT EXCELLENCE
Conduct geographic research with • effectively presenting a • critically analysing

research process, and how this research findings and/or
affects the validity conclusions.
of the research findings.
Ifyou are aiming for good marks then
check the marking rubric in your booklet.
This tells you what is expected.

To get Excellence it must be in all
sections. The Whole Task is marked
 holistically.

Allthe questions are given in the booklet
 so prepare yourself for this.
So what is the context of our
research?
The aim is to choose a research question
that compares Muriwai Beach with St
 Leonard’s Beach.

This is easy as one is a low energy beach
 and the other high energy
The Time Frame for this:
 Step 1: Muriwai Booklets (done)
 Step 2: Planning (today)
 Step 3: Collection of Data (next 2
  lessons)
 Step 4: Background
 Step 5: Write Up 1 (Task 1) (3 lessons)
 Step 6: Background
 Step 7: Write up 2 (Task 2) (2 lessons)
  Last week of term
1. Decide on a group of 4-5 of you. They
must be in your Geo class.
2. In your group work out your research
 questions
3. Work out what you are going to
collect, how and what everyone’s job is
4. Work out how you will present your
 data.

Today’s Task is to do the first
stage of planning in the
booklet.
Points to remember:

You have already collected data from
Muriwai – so base it around that
It must be measurable
It must allow results you can discuss in
depth. Think about what we have covered
 in class.
Think about presentation methods also.

Your Research Question:
Your Research Question
should be based on:

Differences in Elements

Differences in Features

Differences in Processes
So what did we collect?
1. Elements
Waves: Wavelength, wave period, wave
height, sediment in swash and backwash.
Sediment: Type, % of each, where
 found.
Climate: Temperature, wind speed, wind
 direction.
Plants: Plant type, adaptations, patterns.
2. Features
Headland: Field Sketches

Beach: Beach slope

Dunes: Dune Height and shape
3. Processes
Wave Erosion: Observations and map of
wave refraction, evidence of erosion on
 the headland through field sketches
Wave Transport:LSD measurements
Saltation: Observations
Aeolian Deposition: Dune height and
 shape, density of vegetation growth.
What are the problems with
these questions?

What is the difference between Muriwai
 and St Leonard’s beach?
How does the rate of saltation differ
between Muriwai and St Leonard’s beach?
The difference between the beach profile
is the result of the waves.
Today: Complete the planning section in
your group. Give this in for approval.
Next Lesson in Geo: Collect the field
equipment at the beginning of the lesson.
Get your raw data. Your Teacher is
 available for “consultation”.
We will go over the needs for the write up
before it is done. Keep the information
 book safely for reference.

  • 7. Select and discuss geographic concepts relevant to the research topic and /or findings Apply two of the KGCs to your research topic and/or findings somewhere. Do you remember the KGCs? Be clear that you must relate it to your research not just beaches / Muriwai / St Leonard's.
  • 8. • critically analysing findings – how good or bad were they • critically evaluating the research process by building on the detailed evaluation of the process through a discussion of alternative research methods and their implications. Evaluate the research process and/or findings
  • 9. The criteria has different needs for each achievement level: ACHIEVEMENT MERIT EXCELLENCE Conduct geographic research with • effectively presenting a • critically analysing consultation involves: map(s) and statistical and findings • identifying the aim of the research visual data • critically evaluating • planning the research • analysing findings, in the research process detail by building on the • collecting and recording data • providing a detailed evaluation relevant to the aim of the research • presenting a map(s) and statistical conclusion(s), in detail, through a discussion of that relates to the aim of alternative research and/or visual data the research methods and their • analysing findings implications. • evaluating in detail the • providing a conclusion(s) that research process and relates to the aim of the research how this affects the • providing an evaluation of the validity of the research process, and how this research findings and/or affects the validity conclusions. of the research findings.
  • 10. Ifyou are aiming for good marks then check the marking rubric in your booklet. This tells you what is expected. To get Excellence it must be in all sections. The Whole Task is marked holistically. Allthe questions are given in the booklet so prepare yourself for this.
  • 11. So what is the context of our research? The aim is to choose a research question that compares Muriwai Beach with St Leonard’s Beach. This is easy as one is a low energy beach and the other high energy
  • 12. The Time Frame for this: Step 1: Muriwai Booklets (done) Step 2: Planning (today) Step 3: Collection of Data (next 2 lessons) Step 4: Background Step 5: Write Up 1 (Task 1) (3 lessons) Step 6: Background Step 7: Write up 2 (Task 2) (2 lessons) Last week of term
  • 13. 1. Decide on a group of 4-5 of you. They must be in your Geo class. 2. In your group work out your research questions 3. Work out what you are going to collect, how and what everyone’s job is 4. Work out how you will present your data. Today’s Task is to do the first stage of planning in the booklet.
  • 14. Points to remember: You have already collected data from Muriwai – so base it around that It must be measurable It must allow results you can discuss in depth. Think about what we have covered in class. Think about presentation methods also. Your Research Question:
  • 15. Your Research Question should be based on: Differences in Elements Differences in Features Differences in Processes
  • 16. So what did we collect? 1. Elements Waves: Wavelength, wave period, wave height, sediment in swash and backwash. Sediment: Type, % of each, where found. Climate: Temperature, wind speed, wind direction. Plants: Plant type, adaptations, patterns.
  • 17. 2. Features Headland: Field Sketches Beach: Beach slope Dunes: Dune Height and shape
  • 18. 3. Processes Wave Erosion: Observations and map of wave refraction, evidence of erosion on the headland through field sketches Wave Transport:LSD measurements Saltation: Observations Aeolian Deposition: Dune height and shape, density of vegetation growth.
  • 19. What are the problems with these questions? What is the difference between Muriwai and St Leonard’s beach? How does the rate of saltation differ between Muriwai and St Leonard’s beach? The difference between the beach profile is the result of the waves.
  • 20. Today: Complete the planning section in your group. Give this in for approval. Next Lesson in Geo: Collect the field equipment at the beginning of the lesson. Get your raw data. Your Teacher is available for “consultation”. We will go over the needs for the write up before it is done. Keep the information book safely for reference. So where to next?
