URBAN TIGER MANAGEMENT AT
BHOPAL
INTRODUCTION
• MP is a TIGER state . (785
out of 3682 (2022 census)
• Out of 785 tigers 80 tigers
found in Ratapani Landscape
• Like LA,USA home to
Mountain Lion ,Mumbai home
to Leopard , Bhopal home to
Tigers(No other in Earth)
• Tiger use both inside and
outside the urban space of
Bhopal
• adjoining town area &forest
• living with humans in urban
space
FUNCTIONAL TIGER CORRIDOR
RATAPANI BHOPAL KHEONI WILD LIFE SANCTUARY
RATAPANI HAS 80 TIGERS (2023 CENSUS) (20 KM FROM BHOPAL)
Tiger movement around 22 sq. km in jungle around two Dams
i.e. kerwa & kaliyasot
Red=camera Trap
HOW TIGERS SHARING SPACE WITH MILLONS OF PEOPLE?
1.Much more Resilient than we thought.
2.Lot of ability to adapt
so,more credit to them
3. Area between city & forest is MOSAIC (Varying landscape)
Perennial stream ,Tree cover ,Rocky outcrop help them to Navigate Landscape without being detected
CHANGING LANDSCAPE
4.
Perennial stream Tree cover Rocky outcrop
4. Both Natural & Domestic prey available in this Landscape.
i) competition for Resource is low
ii)So, Allowing tigers to live in closer proximity to each other
5. Food abundant in forest
6. Thousands of abandoned cattle roam around Bhopal.(perfect meal)
URBAN TIGER BEHAVIOURAL CHANGE
• Different from jungle tiger
• Shy by nature
• Go hiding by seeing human
• Don’t like confront people
• Avoid human space
• Little bit lazy
• Prey upon cattle (easy catch)
• Gain weight at faster pace (2 year look like 4 year) as don’t go for long chase
• Tigress leave their cub much earlier (1 year compared to 18 months)
• Only sub-adults adventurous ,take risk as they are inexperienced
WORK BY FOREST DEPARTMENT
• 21 KM long fencing to avoid man-animal conflict
• Compensation to cattle owners in 7 days in bank account
• Through e-surveillance system
STEPS TAKEN TO SAVE URBAN TIGER
• Highly adaptive so not feasible to translocate
• Tiger Future in the hand of local people
• 4 Patrolling team (24*7) engaged
• Planning urban space around tiger only way (urban planner
& forest dept. team work)
• 20 houses built near tiger movement area for watch & ward
• 100 Bagha mitra appointed for watch & awareness (from
different fields)
• 4 solar pump & 15 water bodies present
• Using e-surveillance system
• “Young tiger program “ by forest dept. to
aware people
PUBLIC AWARNESS
• Media
• School
• Local residents
• Using banner,poster,signage
• Street play
Impact on forest!
• Forest cover increased comparativelty
AFTER
BEFORE
KERWA FOREST
E-SURVEILLANCE CENTRE FOR
TRACKING ANIMALS AT KERWA,MP
• Has 4 operational towers
• Top of tower-Thermal &
Visual imager
• Whole feed connected to
central room via wireless
network
• Whole station run on
solar power
• Camera (E-eye)- range 5
km long , 360 degree
rotation
• 1 tower scans 75 sq. km.
.so 4 tower 300 sq. km.
• 1 e-Eye surveillance
command centre
PROJECT STATUS
BENEFIT OF
THERMAL
• To counter problem of
camouflage i.e. distinguish
between bushes and
animals hiding
• Easily identifiable because
all hot blooded species
• Helps in night
• Camera has auto mode :-
predefined points where
camera automatically move
& watch those points. If see
any alarming activity will
generate alarm.
Incident Management
OBJECTIVES
• Reduce man –animal conflict in Bhopal reserve forest
• Establishment of a 24X7 surveillance and antipoaching system
• Automated monitoring of tiger or other identified wildlife species
movements
• Significant Improvement in efficiency of response / rescue of any
Wildlife Crime/ Animal respectively
• Strengthen prevention response mechanism against Wildlife/ Forest
Crime
• System driven analytical reports for improvement operational level
efficiency and effective decision making
IMPACT/OUTCOMES
• Conservation of Tiger and other wildlife species
• Improve monitoring efficiency of Forest Officials
• Identification of poaching or other wildlife crime prone areas
• Check on infiltration, poaching and illegal mining
• Fact based information for Effective Decision making
• Command and Control Centre at Forest Head Quarter
WAY FORWARD
• Enhance utilization of the solution for other departments such as
mining, agriculture, pollution control etc.
• Explore utilization for land use change and wild life habitat &
biodiversity Analysis
• Bring other sensors data like Soil moisture Sensor, Air quality sensor,
Flood water sensor, Laser Radar etc. on the system for 360 degree
environmental change analysis
•can be installed places close to railway lines where elephant & tiger
hit by trains can be prevented.
CONCLUSION
• You can’t tell tiger what to do but to
humans
• Role of media important
• Not a single incident of tiger attack
on human being
• Good monitoring system under
urban tiger management
• e-surveillance system is a game
changer
• Work of forest department is really
commendable (Akhilesh kumar
khare)
