Benefits And Risks Of Mass Digital Adoption
I am part of a generation of economists that grew up online. Thus, I have witnessed the growth
promise and disruptive potential of Internet based technologies driven by their capacity to
amplify and propagate economic phenomena. I want to develop and test theories about the
economy wide impact of digital technologies. My (micro)empiricist side built working with Amy
Finkelstein at NBER and Edward Miguel at UC Berkeley tells me to trust data more than
anecdotal evidence. Simultaneously, my (macro)theorist side developed at Universitat Pompeu
Fabra (UPF), UC Berkeley, and LSE reminds me to look at patterns in a system rather than in
isolation. Combining my macro and development interests, I crafted a research agenda to explore
the benefits and risks of mass digital adoption. For this proposal I received the La Caixa
Fellowship Spain s NSF equivalent to fund my future graduate studies in Economics, which I hope
to have the chance to pursue at MIT.
Preparing for Spain s Economics Olympiad during the Great Recession kickstarted my fascination
with economics. Since then, my upwards path towards a PhD has been full of thrilling positive
shocks. My latest jump has been thriving through LSE s topology intensive Real Analysis course,
which has allowed me to retrospectively understand concepts seen throughout my education.
Studying convergence rigorously made the asymptotic theory from UPF s graduate metrics click;

The Pros And Cons Of Redundancy
Redundancy: This is a legal term that arises where an individual is either dismissed, put on short
term or lay off (Grimes and Horgan, 1988), although this is done because of the legal
implications and employers don t like to be sued by employees for such reasons because of the
lump sum accrued to it as damages or penalty. There are identifiable reasons for such act which
could be either the employer has intended to cease to carry on business or the reason for
employment of the individual no longer exists (fewer persons are required). Nonetheless, the
employee (provided he has satisfied the Social Welfare Act of 1952 (as amended) must be
employed by the employer for minimum of 2 years and must be insured under the Social Welfare
Act) is able to establish a ground of redundancy, and it behoves the employer to justify the
selection of redundancy is genuine and in a fair manner(Faulkner, 2008), if not, the damages paid

Multinational performance management
MNEs have specific expectations for each of its foreign subsidiaries, cooperative ventures and other
forms of operations modes, in terms of market performance and contribution to total profits and
competitiveness. It is important to recognise constraints that affect goal attainment when evaluating
subsidiary performance. These include: * Whole versus part a multinational is a single entity that
faces a global environment. Integration and control imperative often place the multinational in the
positions where it decides that the good of the whole is more important than the subsidiary s short
term profitability. * Volatility of the global environment because subsidiaries operate under such
volatility and fluctuation, they must tailor long term goals to the specific situation in a given
market. Problems arise when subsidiary managers perceive that goals are set by distant HQs
strategy team are unrealistic and inflexible, due to a failure to take into account local conditions
that change as a result of a volatile environment. * Separation by

Anne Frank s Life During The Holocaust
Anne Frank The Holocaust was a time of horror and brutality. Anne Frank and her family were
only a few of the many Jews terrorized. Anne was a brave and inspiring young girl in a time that
was anything but pleasant.
Not only were her surroundings difficult but also her family at times. Anne s dad, Otto Frank, was
born in Frankfurt am Main, Germany and joined the banking business working in the family bank
until it closed. He later became a lieutenant in the German army amid World War I. Otto then
married Edith Hollander in 1925 and they wanted to begin a family so they established a home in
Frankfurt. Their first born daughter was Margot and three years later Annelies Marie Frank was

life which showed in the writing of her diary. Some entries were optimistic while others showed
the rough and gloomy conditions. The diary today is very famous in recounting Anne s
experience during the Holocaust and explaining the horrible treatment Jews received. Despite
how careful everyone in the annex was they were discovered and arrested on August 4, 1944 and
taken to the train station to be taken to Westerbork. Westerbork was the transit camp where
Dutch Jews were sent. (Alagna, 56) The prisoners got off at Auschwitz and were put into a
selection process to be picked for work, death, or even medical experiments. When the Franks
arrived they were separated by gender and Otto never got to see his family again. Edith, Margot,
and Anne were given rags to wear, their heads were shaved, and they were taken to the women s
barracks where a number was tattooed on their arms. They had daily roll call which could last for
hours and some people

The Book Of Tea Critical Analysis
Book of Tea by Okakura Kakuzo lends incredible insights into the importance of acceptance of
cultures and self examination. The West, and Americans specifically, need to learn how to
appreciate and learn about cultures, without stealing the credit by claiming ownership. The Book of
Tea is an exploration of this concept with specific focus on the concept of teain Western culture. If
Western society were to truly step back and examine what they hold dear, how much of it could it
attribute to the cultures it has isolated and excluded. He also teaches the reader the importance of
the simplicity by a society being washed away by the advancement of technological innovation.
Society should look to the teacup for the timeless beauty found in the... Show more content on

It is the only Asiatic ceremonial which commands universal esteem. The white man has scoffed at
our religion and our morals, but has accepted the brown beverage without hesitation. It is bizarre
that a drink as simple as tea can have such a profound effect on multiple cultures of the world. As
the only apparently esteemed tradition of the East, naturally, Western society has claimed tea and
incorporated it into its world without accepting its originating culture. Although, oddly enough, it
does offer a glimpse of hope. Humans can relate to cultures they cannot understand through
something as simple as tea. This does not excuse the ignorance that the Western worldpossesses,
but proves that it can relate to a people without accepting them, opening the dialogue of change.
Kakuzo, throughout the book, salutes tea for its innate ability to bring people together. He
describes this phenomenon as the mystery of mutual charity, saying that tea inculcates purity and
harmony [...] the romanticism of the social order. It is essentially a worship of the Imperfect, as it
is a tender attempt to accomplish something possible in this impossible thing we know as life. Tea
is both a unifier and a snapshot of the extraordinary. It binds humans together with a trait they all
share imperfection. Humans understand that perfection is unattainable and, most of the time, this
fear drives most actions. This pushes humans together more than anything

Relationship Between Mexico And Mexico
The relationship of the United States and Mexico goes back centuries and the importance of this
relationship has gained more attention over the last decade. This relationship has gained attention
due to the enormous amount of problems Mexico is having economically and socially. Specifically,
the relationship with Mexicois important to the safety of our nation and U.S. self interest because
of the issues with drug trafficking, gang violence, and immigration. These influences on our
country are vital and play a pivotal role in our economy and rapport with Mexico. These problems
are the results from significant tensions that began in the 19th century with the Mexican War that

schooling for Mexicans became the norm and have not changed over time. Mexican American

How Did Bill Gates Change The World
According to the Oxford Dictionary a leader is someone who commands a group, organization or
country. Now, ask yourself this: Did Jeff Bezos become the richest man in the world, by
commanding those around him? Did Steve Jobs or Bill Gates change the world of technology. by
ordering people around? No one change the world for the better through absolute power, rather,
these people changed the world by inspiring everyone around them. From my personal experience,
and when we examine history, a successful leader does not lead using fear or commands, but with
compassion by inspiring those around them. Throughout history, some of the most successful
leaders have been those who motivated their followers by giving them a moral purpose. While other
leaders throughout history attempted to inspire soldiers with physical wealth, greed eventually led

Powerful Women In The Chrysanthemums By John Steinbeck
Women can now perform tasks much better than men can do and no one can be able to prevent
them from achieving things that they desire in life because what drives them is stronger than the
forces against them. However there are still a number of women today that have low self esteem
and confidence issues. The restoration on confidence and self esteem depends on the people that
surround them in order for them to believe in themselves. In this story there is this women that is

Women should never underestimate themselves at any moment and they should always do what
makes them happy because women are very beautiful, strong and a source of strength to many
who have lost hope in life. Elisa proves this by stating that, I am strong. I never knew before how
strong (Thomas 50). Nobody should be strong enough to discourage a woman from achieving all
she wants in life and people should support women in raising their self esteem because women
are all we need to move forward because a woman is the real definition of love, care and
progress. This is seen in the story when Elisa lays her husband s suit, shoes and tie methodically
and this shows that despite the oppression she is a care

follows:
Raise your hand and hold up three fingers. (This is easy to remember because it looks like a W for
water.)
Wait for the teacher to respond with the same hand signal while nodding yes or no.
Stop by the door and pick up the water fountain lanyard.
Walk directly to the nearest water fountain and back remembering hallway behavior the entire time.
V.Describe your future classroom procedures for gaining the attention of the whole class.
Attention grabbers or whole brain response is a wonderful way to get your students attention.
The procedure is simple. I will say a phrase, and the students will respond with the corresponding
phrase. These will be taught throughout the first week of school. In order for the system to
remain effective, I will have several cues to rotate. The follow are just a few examples of my
favorite.

Beauty And Appearance In Hedda Gabler And Thea Lovborg
In the play Hedda Gabler, beauty and appearances as they relate to social class are important
themes that impact the characters, specifically the women. The two main women in the play;
Hedda Gabler and Thea Lovborg are both figures of beauty, physically and morally, and contrast
with each other creating conflict between them. This brings up the question: how does physical
appearance connect to moral appearance in women in Hedda Gabler? Physical appearance and
moral character are very different and can shape the role of a character in society. Hedda is seen
as more physically appealing, as said by Tesman in the play, and Thea is presented as more
morally appealing. Physical appearance is more often noted by the men in the play than moral
character, because the proof of having moral appearance is through how the women treat each
other. The women in Hedda Gabler display different forms of beauty, such as physical and moral
appearance that are connected to the other characters identification in the play.
Beauty is a combination of qualities in a human being, whether it is internal or external. Internal
beauty could be represented as moral appearance, and external beauty is physical appearance.
Hedda in the play displays beauty in many ways, but mainly physically. This means she is
appealing to the eye and has nice characteristics making her viewed as very pretty in society. The
men in the play are responsible for the identification of who is physically or morally attractive.

Gout Disease Research Paper
Gout disease was known over 4000 year by the Egyptians, Romans and the Greeks. It was named
the rich man disease or disease of kings for it was related to the standard of living that only
wealthy people can afford in that time. The first time the Egyptians documented the gout disease

arthritis that is very painful. It occurs when there is an excess of uric acidin the bloodstream. The
acid forms crystals in joints, causing sudden and severe pain, swelling, redness and tenderness.
Most people at first experience gout at the base of the big toe. Gout can also affect others movable

Analysis Of Memento
Christopher Nolan s Memento follows Leonard Shelby in his vengeful quest to find the murderer
of his wife. Leo suffers from short term memory loss and traces any recent information and
memories through tattoos, notes, and photographs. Throughout the film, time is distorted yet linear.
Scenes in color are followed by ones in black and white. There is a sequential order to the film, but
it is not presented in that manner. Timeis treated as a changing, personal force rather than a solely
standardized, detached authority. This creates a beautiful dynamic within the film, for beauty, I

arises from time s dismantlement. Standardized time looms over Leo and is real, yet his sense of
time is also real. The ambiguity and multiplicity of time in Memento challenges time s common
perception as undeviating and monotonous. This departure from the normal view of an everyday
concept exists within this scene and the entire film and, for me, make Memento

The Meaning Of Socrates An Unexamined Life Is Not Worth...
Socrates stated that An unexamined life is not worth living . In his day this was a very bold
statement. The people back then was stuck in their own ways. They had their ways of thinking and
that was it. Having someone come in and try to show them another way of thinking was not
acceptable. They were not ready for Socrates, therefore they took him to trail, and where he was
sentenced to death for his believes. I think there are several different meanings for his statement.
Was he right, was the jury right in sentencing him to death and what was the outcome of his death?
There is not a clear way to say if Socrates was right or wrong in his statement, but in my opinion he
was a brave man. His statement An unexamined life is not worth living is something everyone

Who was these people to say if Socrates was wrong in teaching or speaking his beliefs? The
philosopher felt that, what he said was true, and stood up for it no matter the cost. The jury found
Socrates guilty by a vote of 280 to 221. That was a close vote, for a man who so many said was
wrong. Socrates expected to lose much more than this. Meletus proposed the death penalty, and
Socrates was asked to propose a different form of punishment. Being the person Socrates was he
doesn t ask himself what penalty he wants to pay, but what penalty he deserves. He feels as if he
cannot propose an appropriate penalty when he has not intentionally wronged anybody. Even so,
he rejects most of the penalties the jury might consider to be acceptable. Being held in prison
would leave him under the control of someone else. Banishment would just send him to wander

that he can so his duty to God and purse goodness. After Socrates belief and rather weird request

The Sorrowful Woman By Gail Godwin
When it comes to marriage, we expect the fairy tale story that we grew up watching on tv and
reading in books; stories such as Cinderella, Snow White, or Aladdin. We re convinced that
marriage will solve our problems. We have the false conception that marriage will bring us the
perfect white picket fence, 2.4 kids and a nice dog; that our husband/wife will be ideal, and that
we ll live happily ever after. In the story The Sorrowful Woman by Gail Godwin; modern marriage
is portrayed as the perfect fairytale that went horribly wrong. Godwin s protagonist The wife and
mother can be described as selfish and self centered due to her unwillingness to conform to the
fairytale that she finds herself resenting.
In a structured family each person has their own role in order for the family as a whole to
function properly. The wife is often referred to as the Angel in the house . Her designated role is
to be the nurturer. A good mother is expected to contribute her whole life to her family. Mothers
are expected to be the glue that holds a family together. It is their responsibility to provide the
loving care and support needed for raising children, making her husband feel loved, and taking
care of household chores and preparing daily meals. In the household the father also has a
fundamental role. They play the breadwinner , their position in the marriage/ family is to care for
the needs of their family by providing shelter, food, and safety. Neither the wife nor husband is

What Is The Juxtaposition Of Light And Dark
Dark and light, good and evil, joy and sadness, real and imaginary: these are the ideas that iconic
Belgian painter RenГ© Magritte, and other surrealist artists like him, strived to arouse in the minds
of their viewers. Magritte s work features supernatural, often unsettling images which play with the
imagination and confuse the mind. As part of the surrealist movement, Magritte s purpose behind
his paintings was to intrigue people, make them think about the subconscious mind, and to blur
the lines between reality and dreams. In his famous painting, L Empire des lumiГЁres, or The
Empire of Light, a bright, blue, daytime sky full of white clouds appears over a darkened street, a

The juxtaposition of light and dark in The Empire of Light may represent the contrast of
everyday elements and ideas present in the world around us. As explained by Michael Glover,
night and day are present simultaneously. This is unnerving, the simultaneity of daylight and
darkness. It disturbs us visually and morally. Can light co habit with darkness, good with evil?
Well, yes, man is such a patchwork creature of light and dark, the will to do good, the propensity
to choose evil (Glover, para. 3). At first the main effect this painting has on the observer is
confusion; night and day cannot exist together in the same place at the same time, after all.
After observing it in more detail, though, many symbols and themes begin to arise. Considering
the contrast between light values used, the day and night in this image could represent the
clichГ© symbols of good and evil, or joy and sadness, respectively. Just as both times of day are
present in this painting, so are these emotions and traits present in everyday life; they exist
always and everywhere. By analyzing not only the painting itself, but the title as well, this theme
becomes more apparent. Several versions of its title exist due to translation issues, and many
refer to this piece as The Dominion of Light instead. This could mean that the light portrayed in
this painting is dominating the darkness, because of its placement above the shadow, and, in fact,
it is showing the dominion of light over darkness or purity over corruption. This piece shows the
power that good has over evil, or that joy has over sadness, while portraying both of the latter as
an impenetrable veil of darkness and the former as the bright clarity of the sky. The use of light
sources and contrast between value in The Empire of Light contributes to this theme of light and
dark, purity and wickedness, or joy and sadness. This interpretation also

jointly developed by Niantic Inc. and the PokГ©mon Company which is downloadable for iOS
and android devices. This game unlike other mobile games was meant to send people outside
and to provoke the players into meeting new people. It is a game that features built in GPS in
devices as you would walk, drive and travel to hunt for these creatures that will appear on a map
to locate various places. In contrast to other games, PokГ©mon Go is comprised of gyms to
train the captured creatures in order to team up with other players to battle. This resulted in the
count of players of PokГ©mon Go to jump up to 45 million at the beginning. But it started
declining as shown in the chart below taken from the Bloomberg Markets website. According to
the chart, after the end of July 2016, there were no addition of players to the game as well as the
current players have dropped the game. This is a visible factor to predict the reasons that
PokГ©mon Go has been decreasing due to dangerous incidents, taking up too much time and
concerns of their health issues. (Fig.1. These Charts Show That Pokemon Is Already in Decline;

The Witchcraft Trials And The Impact Of The Salem Witch...
In 1692, a gloomy and horrendous time in American History occurred, especially for the people
in the small village of Salem. This dark time in history was known as the Salem Witch Trials. In
the Salem Witch Trials more than 200 people in the Salem village were accused of practicing
witchcraft and twenty innocent people were killed during the frightening time of the trials. The
Salem Witch Trials was a series of cases due to witchcraft brought before local judges in the
village in the Massachusetts Bay colony in the seventeenth century. The trials officially began in
February of 1692, when three women named Tituba, Sarah Good and Sarah Osborne, were
accused of witchcraft by four girls who intentionally started the witchcraft . The Salem Witch
Trials finally ended in May of 1693, when the judges decided to let all of the inmates accused of
witchcraft out of jail. Although the trials did not occur for a long period of time, the trials did
have a major impact on American History. The Salem Witch Trials began when three girls were
accused of witchcraft. In Massachusetts in the seventeenth century, many people had much fear of
the devil, and always thought that the devil was trying to find ways to tear apart their community
and their friends along with their family members. Salem was a strongly religious community.
Tituba, one of the girls who was accused of being witch, confessed that she and the other three girls
were witches, said that she, along with the others worked for the

Over the years, I have come to realize that the greatest trap in our life is not success, popularity, or

with society. In the short storyLinh Lai by Rebecca Rosenblum, Linh Lai helplessly suffers
rejection as she struggles to meet her uncle and Mr. Koenburg s expectations. In the short story

Lastly, Mr. Koenberg tries to prevent Linh from talking to the skaters. You talk to those something

making her worry of what he would think of her when she continues to talk to the skaters. Linh
struggles as her uncle Steve and Mr. Koenberg rejects her for not meeting their expectations.
The graphic novel American Born Chinese shows how being rejected by society leads to self
rejection. Firstly, the monkey king is denied entry to the dinner party because he is a monkey.
When the monkey king demands to be let into the dinner party, the guard says Look. You may
be a king you may even be a deity but you are still a monkey, (Yang 15), and then, the monkey
king begins to notice and hate the thick smell of monkey fur when he gets home. Additionally,
the monkey king refuses to call himself a monkey. Tze yo tzuh visits the monkey king one day,
and he then calls the monkey king a silly little monkey, but the monkey king doesn t accept this,
and then Tze yo tzu says, I created you. I say that you are a monkey. Therefore, you are a
monkey. (69). Lastly, Jin rejects to be himself due to the fact that he is Chinese, therefore, he
cannot ask Amelia out. One night, Jin desperately wants to have a completely different
appearance, and then he dreams of the herbalist s wife, and she says, So, little friend, you have

Relationship between conflict of interest and firm innovativeness: An interest may be defined as
a commitment, goal, or value held by an individual or an institution. Conflict of interests exists
when two or more contra indicatory interests relate to an activity by an individual or an

individuals. That means a conflict of interest is not intrinsically a bad thing. A conflict of interest
is a situation in which a corporation or person with a vested interest in a company becomes
unreliable because of the clash between personal interests and professional interests. An example
of a conflict of interest would be a board member voting on the induction of lower premiums for
companies with fleet vehicles when he is the owner of a truck company outside of the corporation.

The Politics Of The United States
In the United States, elections can be the deciding factor in ones political career. In recent times,
congressional elections have not only become increasingly important, but also more expensive.
The expense is often considered a result of modern times, however it results in many people
being unable to run for a political position. This begs the question of who might be running for a
political position if the price wasn t so high, would it be a more common person who relates more
to the people. Often incumbents, those currently in office, are able to edge out competitors
because of money. The price of elections can also affect issues that are covered by politicians.
While its not too hard to fill the requirements for becoming a senator or representative, most people
are unable to run for electiondue to the financial burden. In current times this leads to politicians
caring less about issues and more on their image, money, and reelection. This is because money
is related to power so the more money one has, the more powerful one is, and this also relates to
reelection and image. During the 2012 congressional election senators, on average, raised
$10,476,451 and representative, on average, raised $1,689,580 (Costa). These numbers are the
reason why congress is referred to as the millionaires club, over half of the Senate and nearly half
of the House are considered millionaires (Condon). This amount is not something and average

The Origins Of Christianity And Christianity
Christianity is one of the most common religions of the world and was founded in the early
stages of time as we know it. Christianity was formed by the power of one man, Jesus Christ,
whose life was unexplainably different from anyone else s of his time. The influences of his
character, beliefs, customs, and teachings, are the foundation of the religion today. Throughout time
and as more knowledge was gained and received, the customs of the religion changed and new
smaller groups broke free from tradition and formed themselves into their own organizations. Every
event that happened shaped the religion, but the messiah or better known as the Son of God, played
the most important role. JesusChrist born circa 6 B.C in Bethlehem which is the south city of
Jerusalem was born of Virgin Mary and Joseph, but as the author states, Christians have believed
that Jesus was born in Bethlehem. The details are fully explained in the rabbinic interpretation
which is provided in the Old Testament. (Fisher, 2014, 305) There is very little written about
Jesus s early life. But what is said in The Gospel of Luke (2:41 52) conveys that when Jesus was
12 years old, he had accompanied his parents on a pilgrimage to Jerusalem and they became
disunited. After a few days, he was found in a temple conversing affairs with some of Jerusalem s
elders. Throughout the New Testament, there are a few trace references of Jesus working as a
carpenter while he was a young adult. Moreover, at age 30

Tottenham Hotspur s Plans For A New Stadium
In this case study we were given the opportunity to evaluate Tottenham Hotspur s plans for a new
stadium and a new striker. The Chairman of Tottenham, Daniel Levy has focused on three
pillars that he believes could sustain long term success for Spurs. Levy states, If you sign older
players at huge salaries but don t get the immediate football success you dreamed of, you cripple
yourself (p.2). The pillars are: the development of a new stadium, the building of a new training
facility, and the continual improvement of the club through prudent player acquisitions during
the various transfer windows. Adhering to these pillars would allow for continued success in
both domestic and European football, as well as the development of the company s assets.
Ultimately, this would allow for the club to build their brand, which in turn will lead to greater
revenues being streamed in. Not only is the club historic, but it also possesses 20 million fans
worldwide. As a result, in 2008 White Hart Lane sold out every game and there was a 20,000
person waiting list for seating tickets. With soccer gaining more traction worldwide, more fans are
likely to flock to games. The club receives revenues from four major sources: attendance,
sponsorship, merchandise sales, and broadcast rights. Its main costs are players salaries and the
costs of operating the stadium. White Hart Lane cannot be renovated to include 60,000 seats. Thus,
if Tottenham wants to expand their potential for revenues they

The Church taught that Christ, Mary, and the Saints had done more than needed for their salvation,
thereby accumulating a treasury of merits which the Church could distribute, for a monetary fee,
so people could lessen their time in Purgatory . When Pope Leo X required more funds, he began a
mass selling of indulgences, claiming immediate release from any time in Purgatory, aided by
salesmen such as John Tetzel (Meister and Stump, 2016, p.324). Luther found this practice corrupt,
abusive, and theologically wrong, as it taught that people were denied the grace of God and ignored
the importance of faith and true contrition (Luther, 2002, p.549). Luther also had problems with
how the Catholic Church performed the Eucharist. He stated that the clergy held the sacrament
captive from the laity threefold: by denying them the wine, making mass a good work , and by
holding it captive to Aristotelian metaphysics by the doctrine of Transubstantiation (GonzГЎlez,

Native American Perspective on Indian Removal Act
In May 1830, Congress passed the Indian Removal Act which forced Native American tribes to
move west. Some Indians left swiftly, while others were forced to to leave by the United States
Army. Some were even taken away in chains. Andrew Jackson, the seventh president of the United
States, strongly reinforced this act. In the Second State of the Union Address, Jackson advocated
his Indian Policy. There was controversy as to whether the removal of the Native Americans was
justified under the administration of President Andrew Jackson. In my personal opinion, as a Native
American, the removal of the tribes was not in any way justified.

Jackson felt the removal of the Cherokees from our land was justified because the government was
paying for everything. Money can not compensate for the blood that was shed by our ancestors.
When some Indian tribes did not leave the land, federal troops came to Georgia to remove the
tribes forcibly. Cherokees resisted leaving their land until the bitter finish. Cherokees were marched
by gunpoint which was known as the infamous Trail of Tears. Many died due to the horrid
conditions, including my great grandmother. Any sensible person would have considered the
consequences of these actions. Jackson tried to make the trade seem peaceful and reasonable, but
there is nothing sane about the Trail of Tears. The consequence of a speedy removal will be
important to the United States, and to the Indians themselves (91). If Jackson really cared about
our well being, like he claimed, why would he allow the horrific Trail of Tears to persist? This
exhibits Jackson s insincerity and disregard for the inhuman conditions my ancestors had endure.
A main argument Andrew Jackson had was that the Indian Removal Act was only a continuation of
a change that was already happened, The present policy of the government is but a continuation of
the same progressive change by a milder process (93). He then continued to state how the tribes that
previously occupied the eastern states were annihilated to make room for the whites. This was a

The Influence Of Imperialism In American Imperialism
In the 1890s some Americans were eager to expand. Post Civil War the U.S. was going through a
time where they thought that they were lagging behind other nations in terms of expansionism.
America felt that they were lacking what they needed in order to become a powerhouse. Many
Americans, like Theodore Roosevelt or Alfred Thayer Mahan, were imperialists who wanted to
acquire land/territories for the U.S. The United Statessought to find their identity as a nation in the
world. American Identity to imperialists can be defined as patriotism, military power, and
dominance/hegemony. This was controversial because some Americans were anti imperialists who
did not believe in expansionism, but in defending the Constitution. This brought about both
supporters and opponents of imperialismduring the Spanish American War. Manifest Destiny is
defined as the 19th century belief that expansion of the U.S. throughout the American continents
were both justified and inevitable. This God given right fueled western settlement and
imperialistic belief. Imperialist Senator Albert Beveridge, September 1898, made a speech that
stated the flag of liberty will circle the globe...benighted peoples will know the voice of liberty is
speaking...civilization is dawning. This demonstrates the belief of expanding to territories around
the globe. Charles Denby wrote a forum in November 1898 titled Shall we keep the Phillipines. In

Abstract
The primary concern of this paper is to establish the impact of the USA Patriot Act on local law

My Experience On The Adventure Of My Life
There I was doing 65 mph, I was behind my dad going straight when we came to a smooth curve
I pulled in my brake a tad bit letting off the gas dropping down to about 50mph when I went off
the edge and at that moment fear took over me not knowing if I was going to get hurt or go on
the adventure of a lifetime! There I was running home happier than I ever was before it was going
to be the first day got to go on a snowmobiletrip! I burst thru the front door of my house ran up to
my bedroom and got straight to packing packed a backpack with my cloths and a dophile bag
with my brand new helmet, gloves, jacket and snowpants carried my bags downstairs and sat
them in the mound of other bags from my brother and dad. I helped my dad and brother carry all
our stuff outside setting it into my dad s truck we then backed up my dad s truck to our
snowmobile trailer where we had already had 3 snowmobiles loaded up we hooked up and pulled
it to the front of our house. We went inside and said goodbye to my mom and grabbed the final

The Right And Bear Arms
Christal Blege
April 23, 2015
Professor Swint.
The right to bear arms? Our second amendment right is something that I feel that most
Americans would go to war over. I never grew up around guns, I have never held a gun, or
discharged a gun. More importantly, I have never used a gun to protect me, my property or my
family. This is why I fail to see the fascination people have with the right to own a gun, especially
military grade firearms like assault rifles. Assault rifles were designed to kill people and have no
legitimate civilian purpose. (Infobased Learning 2008) So why then is ok for every ordinary Joe
over the age of 21 with a permit to own one. Statistically speaking one in every three people in the
U.S. own at least one firearm, and of those 48% own four or more firearms. In the past 40 years the
percentage of gun ownership has gone from forty seven percent to thirty four percent. But guns do
serve other purposes like protection and safety.
When having a conversation about gun rights it is clear that it veers towards American standards
and values. It comes back to a very basic question, how big of a role should the government have in
our everyday lives. We put our faith in our justice system most of the time. So when the highest
court in the land gets together and debates and interprets the second amendment to mean that the
individual has the right to own guns, we shouldn t debate it. another argument that gun control
supporters use is ,with stricter gun

The Center Of The Earth By Jules Verne A German Writer
Journey to the Center of the Earth is a well known book written by Jules Verne a German writer.
Directors thought it was such a great book that three movies were created because of this. It is a
science fiction, adventure novel, the book is written in first person point of view; viewing the
main character of the book named Axel. Journey to the Center of the Earth takes place in many
places, in the beginning we got to know the characters in the town of Hamburg, Germany. For a
couple of chapters in the middle they were in Iceland in the capital, Reykjavik. After that they were
at Sneffels an extinct volcanothat leads to the Center of the Earth, the mood changed a lot
throughout the novel being happy through the beginning, dark in the middle, and serious at the
end. At the start of the book it takes place on May 24, 1863.The setting influences the book
because of being in the early times Jules Vernethought it might had been possible to go to the
center of the earth. The theme is telling us to try something new and not to let your fear hold you
back from trying those things.
The characters in the novel are Axel the protagonist he is the nephew of Professor Lidenbrock.
Axel is a round and dynamic, we know a lot about him because he shows that he is scared to go to
the center of the earth and we know that he takes after his uncle because he is an intelligent man,
because he know about the eras of time and all the animals that lived during that time. He is also
dynamic because

The Neanderthal
The Neanderthal: An Overview Most people have heard of the Neanderthal, but there is a
disconnect in how people understand this ancestor or cousin to modern man. The history, anatomy,
culture and genetics of Neanderthal Man shed light on the relationship between this species and our
own. This essay considers the Neanderthalman in terms of its evolutionary history, anatomy, and
culture, investigating the genetic relationship of this speciesto Homo sapiens sapiens, or modern
man. The essay pays special attention to the evidence offered for the Neanderthal s existence and
evolution, ultimately concluding that very little is actually known, though a preponderance of
evidence exists for ongoing research and analysis.

Consequences Of Utilitarianism
Utilitarianism is a theory in normative ethics holding that the proper course of action is the one that
maximizes overall happiness. It is now generally taken to be a form of consequentialism, According
to utilitarianism the moral worth of an action is determined only by its resulting outcome although
there is debate over how much consideration should be given to actual consequences, foreseen
consequences and intended consequences. Utilitarianismhas often been considered the natural ethic
of a democracy operating by simple majority without protection of individual rights. In this essay, I
will argue that utilitarianism is incorrect because of the objection that it does not provide adequate
protection for individual rights, and that not everything... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A utilitarian would argue that just because rights are not directly considered in relation to the
consequences of an action, they do in fact have some impact on the chosen action. With majority
of the population getting happiness out of doing the right thing, rights are often protected through
Utilitarianism. For the small minority of people that don t experience unhappiness from
disregarding human rights, the existence of the police force ensures human right are protected
from these members of society. With human rights being protected under law, people rights will
be upheld under Utilitarianism because there will always be a larger amount of disutility from
violating the law than from the personal gains of a human right offender. For example the CEO
and CFO of Tyco a New Jersey based company stole $150 million and inflated Tyco incomes by
$500 million, in doing so they violated the rights of investors. After the police discovered this fraud,
the justice system penalized both, with a sentence of 8 25 years in prison with the addition of $2.92
billion paid to Tyco Investors. Under Utilitarianism this case wouldn t occur because the benefits of
stealing this money would never outweigh the consequences that result from being caught for
defrauding investors. Therefore even though rights are not considered in

Observation Of Daya
During this past week, I was enjoying some relaxation time from my busy and hectic schedule
and watching some Netflix. I was watching an episode of Orange Is The New Black, form
Season 1. The overall summary of the episode that I was watching was that there was an inmate,
Daya, who was pregnant from one of the prison guards who also happens to be her boyfriend. In
a panic of trying to protect the boyfriend/prison guard from being fired once it is figured out that
Daya is pregnant, multiple inmates work together in coming up with a plan trying to help out Daya.
The helpers include Daya s familymembers, people from the same race, and a couple random
women from a different clique. It was a little odd that all these inmates were working together
trying to help out Daya in such an involved and difficult situation. All of these women who are
usually at each other s throats are now working together trying to come up with solutions. In
addition to this, the solution that the group decided on, was given by one the women from the
outside clique, which was odd. However, we later learn that the reason why she... Show more

The ones that helped Daya out the most were her family members, which were her mother and
sister. This shows that the Genetic Relatives Study is very much true, showing that even in a
high risk situation, Daya s mother and sister were still willing to help. However, one of the main
reasons why Daya s mother was helping out was because she wanted to make sure her
grandchild was going to be okay, a demonstration of Kin Selection . The women that were from
the same race, shows that we tend to help people that look like us. Then the other random women,
who were also helping out Daya, were clearly doing so for their own benefit and personal gain.
They were not demonstrating any sort of altruism, however more of an egoistic style of

To Build A Fire Theme
To Build a Fire is a story written by Jack London. While reading this, there is a man and a dog. It
s the man s first winter and he isn t sure about survival in the wild. As the story goes on, the dog
wants to stop and take shelter, but the man does not. When they finally stopped, the man built no
fire. He then froze to death. The dogmoved on to the camp they were traveling to in the first place
that the man obviously did not get to. This proves the dog did not care for the man and wanted
only food and warmth. This shows that the theme in To Build a Fire is to always value a dog s
instinct. The first way this theme is developed is when the dog did not want to cross the river.
This is because the dog knew if he had water

Brokeback Mountain Psychology
Brokeback Mountain is a film that describes a tragedy surrounding forbidden love. The love is
between two men, Ennis and Jack and the setting is Wyoming for twenty years from the 1960 s
to the 1980 s. This was a time of conservative values that looked at homosexuality in a negative
light. These values caused Ennis and Jack to create a life that was what was expected in spite of
what they wanted. From this came a great deal of frustration and pain for the two men, their
wives, and families. The movie also related to a common issue of today s society and that is the
continued discrimination of the LGBT community. There are signs of change in modern
society, but also much needed work to be done to allow an individual to live a life with freedom
to express their sexuality. When the viewer looks at the film from a sociological perspective, the
issue of societal norms is seen and the abnormal relationship in a homosexual relationship is the
focus. When you think of the western part of the United States, the wild west comes to mind.
Settlers moving across our country during the 1800 s to start a new life and look for adventure.
With that comes the roles of the men and women who were involved in the movement. Men were
considered real men , that were in charge of their lives, law, women, and the land. These men
conquered all that was put in front of them and never backed away from what was put in front of
them. Their sexuality was seen as a dominate male who loved and

Relationships Between Humbert And Lolita
Bonnie and Clyde. Sherlock Holmes and John Watson. Classic relationships between characters are
known universally. These vital relationships make stories come alive. But certain connections in
stories are detrimental to the characters. These can actually make the story that much more
interesting. Brett Ashley and Jake Barnes. Tom and Daisy Buchanan. These are the relationships
that ruin themselves but become ubiquitous for their violence and conflict. And sometimes that is
just more interesting. Vladimir Nabokov s novelLolitaexplores this idea about relationships,
especially between Humbert Humbert and Lolita. It challenges interpersonal connections that we ve
come to know so well. Although Humbert continually proves himself as an unreliable narrator who
can t repent because he constantly manipulates the truth, he actually does repent his sins because he
ends up realizing the atrocity and irreparable damage of his actions. We can see that Humbert never
truly repents his sins because he ultimately writes this novel for the jury to read; therefore, he can
completely justify his wrongdoings without repenting at all. Humbert s ability to make the jury the
reader take his side is seen many times in the novel when he breaks the fourth wall: Ladies and
gentlemen of the jury, the majority of sex offenders...are innocuous, inadequate, passive, timid
strangers who merely ask the community to allow them to pursue their practically harmless, so
called aberrant behavior...without

Gilgamesh Death Theme
Phillip Fok
IH 851 173
October 19, 2016
Final Draft
What is Death? What does it mean to die? Is death just as simple as dying? These questions are
brought up in The Epic of Gilgamesh and are a part of a theme in the epic. The story goes that
after Enkidu s death, Gilgamesh s dear friend; Gilgamesh goes and searches for Utanapishtim to
find the secret to immortality. When Gilgamesh does find Utanapishtim, and ask for the secret,
Utanapishtim responds with No one can see death [...] yet there is a savage death that snaps off
mankind (42). Death is something that only exists in man, but not gods. In a literal sense it is
immortality, in a figurative way it is change. Gods never change; they represent a greater
unchanging belief and because ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In a way when a character changes, his or her old self dies . For example, when Enkidu was first
born he lived his entire life in the forest with the animals, but when he met Shamat he was
changed. In this case his old self had died and thus this Enkidu that once lived in the wilderness
with the animals no longer existed. The death of Gilgamesh s old character is when he becomes
the kind and good king at the end of the epic. At first when we meet Gilgamesh we see that he is
a ruthless king that does whatever he wants, like sacrificing warriors, taking what he wants, and
sleeping with the wives of nobles. Throughout the epic he goes through several deaths like when
Enkidu died, Gilgamesh had grown hair over his body, and wore the skin of a lion and started to
roam the wilderness (32), in this case the once prideful and handsome, Gilgamesh that we met in the
beginning of the epic, had died along with Enkidu. Another death is during his adventure is when
he encountered the scorpion beings. The once boastful and powerful Gilgamesh cowered in fear
when he first met them

  • 2. Benefits And Risks Of Mass Digital Adoption I am part of a generation of economists that grew up online. Thus, I have witnessed the growth promise and disruptive potential of Internet based technologies driven by their capacity to amplify and propagate economic phenomena. I want to develop and test theories about the economy wide impact of digital technologies. My (micro)empiricist side built working with Amy Finkelstein at NBER and Edward Miguel at UC Berkeley tells me to trust data more than anecdotal evidence. Simultaneously, my (macro)theorist side developed at Universitat Pompeu Fabra (UPF), UC Berkeley, and LSE reminds me to look at patterns in a system rather than in isolation. Combining my macro and development interests, I crafted a research agenda to explore the benefits and risks of mass digital adoption. For this proposal I received the La Caixa Fellowship Spain s NSF equivalent to fund my future graduate studies in Economics, which I hope to have the chance to pursue at MIT. Preparing for Spain s Economics Olympiad during the Great Recession kickstarted my fascination with economics. Since then, my upwards path towards a PhD has been full of thrilling positive shocks. My latest jump has been thriving through LSE s topology intensive Real Analysis course, which has allowed me to retrospectively understand concepts seen throughout my education. Studying convergence rigorously made the asymptotic theory from UPF s graduate metrics click; fixed points helped me understand the contraction mapping ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Pros And Cons Of Redundancy Redundancy: This is a legal term that arises where an individual is either dismissed, put on short term or lay off (Grimes and Horgan, 1988), although this is done because of the legal implications and employers don t like to be sued by employees for such reasons because of the lump sum accrued to it as damages or penalty. There are identifiable reasons for such act which could be either the employer has intended to cease to carry on business or the reason for employment of the individual no longer exists (fewer persons are required). Nonetheless, the employee (provided he has satisfied the Social Welfare Act of 1952 (as amended) must be employed by the employer for minimum of 2 years and must be insured under the Social Welfare Act) is able to establish a ground of redundancy, and it behoves the employer to justify the selection of redundancy is genuine and in a fair manner(Faulkner, 2008), if not, the damages paid is a sum payment to the employee, calculated by reference to the length of the employee s service and normal weekly wages at the date of dismissal as stipulated in the Irish Redundancy Payments... Anne was a brave and inspiring young girl in a time that was anything but pleasant. Not only were her surroundings difficult but also her family at times. Anne s dad, Otto Frank, was born in Frankfurt am Main, Germany and joined the banking business working in the family bank until it closed. He later became a lieutenant in the German army amid World War I. Otto then married Edith Hollander in 1925 and they wanted to begin a family so they established a home in Frankfurt. The West, and Americans specifically, need to learn how to appreciate and learn about cultures, without stealing the credit by claiming ownership. The Book of Tea is an exploration of this concept with specific focus on the concept of teain Western culture. If Western society were to truly step back and examine what they hold dear, how much of it could it attribute to the cultures it has isolated and excluded. The white man has scoffed at our religion and our morals, but has accepted the brown beverage without hesitation. It is bizarre that a drink as simple as tea can have such a profound effect on multiple cultures of the world. As the only apparently esteemed tradition of the East, naturally, Western society has claimed tea and incorporated it into its world without accepting its originating culture. Although, oddly enough, it does offer a glimpse of hope. Humans can relate to cultures they cannot understand through something as simple as tea. This does not excuse the ignorance that the Western worldpossesses, but proves that it can relate to a people without accepting them, opening the dialogue of change. Kakuzo, throughout the book, salutes tea for its innate ability to bring people together. He describes this phenomenon as the mystery of mutual charity, saying that tea inculcates purity and harmony [...] the romanticism of the social order. It is essentially a worship of the Imperfect, as it is a tender attempt to accomplish something possible in this impossible thing we know as life. Tea is both a unifier and a snapshot of the extraordinary. It binds humans together with a trait they all share imperfection. Humans understand that perfection is unattainable and, most of the time, this fear drives most actions. This pushes humans together more than anything ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Now, ask yourself this: Did Jeff Bezos become the richest man in the world, by commanding those around him? Did Steve Jobs or Bill Gates change the world of technology. by ordering people around? No one change the world for the better through absolute power, rather, these people changed the world by inspiring everyone around them. From my personal experience, and when we examine history, a successful leader does not lead using fear or commands, but with compassion by inspiring those around them. Beauty And Appearance In Hedda Gabler And Thea Lovborg In the play Hedda Gabler, beauty and appearances as they relate to social class are important themes that impact the characters, specifically the women. The two main women in the play; Hedda Gabler and Thea Lovborg are both figures of beauty, physically and morally, and contrast with each other creating conflict between them. This brings up the question: how does physical appearance connect to moral appearance in women in Hedda Gabler? Physical appearance and moral character are very different and can shape the role of a character in society. Hedda is seen as more physically appealing, as said by Tesman in the play, and Thea is presented as more morally appealing. Physical appearance is more often noted by the men in the play than moral character, because the proof of having moral appearance is through how the women treat each other. The women in Hedda Gabler display different forms of beauty, such as physical and moral appearance that are connected to the other characters identification in the play. Beauty is a combination of qualities in a human being, whether it is internal or external. Internal beauty could be represented as moral appearance, and external beauty is physical appearance. Leo suffers from short term memory loss and traces any recent information and memories through tattoos, notes, and photographs. Throughout the film, time is distorted yet linear. Scenes in color are followed by ones in black and white. There is a sequential order to the film, but it is not presented in that manner. Timeis treated as a changing, personal force rather than a solely standardized, detached authority. They were not ready for Socrates, therefore they took him to trail, and where he was sentenced to death for his believes. I think there are several different meanings for his statement. Was he right, was the jury right in sentencing him to death and what was the outcome of his death? Meletus proposed the death penalty, and Socrates was asked to propose a different form of punishment. Being the person Socrates was he doesn t ask himself what penalty he wants to pay, but what penalty he deserves. What Is The Juxtaposition Of Light And Dark Dark and light, good and evil, joy and sadness, real and imaginary: these are the ideas that iconic Belgian painter RenГ© Magritte, and other surrealist artists like him, strived to arouse in the minds of their viewers. Magritte s work features supernatural, often unsettling images which play with the imagination and confuse the mind. As part of the surrealist movement, Magritte s purpose behind his paintings was to intrigue people, make them think about the subconscious mind, and to blur the lines between reality and dreams. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The juxtaposition of light and dark in The Empire of Light may represent the contrast of everyday elements and ideas present in the world around us. As explained by Michael Glover, night and day are present simultaneously. This is unnerving, the simultaneity of daylight and darkness. It disturbs us visually and morally. Can light co habit with darkness, good with evil? Well, yes, man is such a patchwork creature of light and dark, the will to do good, the propensity to choose evil (Glover, para. 3). At first the main effect this painting has on the observer is confusion; night and day cannot exist together in the same place at the same time, after all. After observing it in more detail, though, many symbols and themes begin to arise. Considering the contrast between light values used, the day and night in this image could represent the clichГ© symbols of good and evil, or joy and sadness, respectively. Just as both times of day are present in this painting, so are these emotions and traits present in everyday life; they exist always and everywhere. By analyzing not only the painting itself, but the title as well, this theme becomes more apparent. Several versions of its title exist due to translation issues, and many refer to this piece as The Dominion of Light instead. This could mean that the light portrayed in this painting is dominating the darkness, because of its placement above the shadow, and, in fact, it is showing the dominion of light over darkness or purity over corruption. This piece shows the power that good has over evil, or that joy has over sadness, while portraying both of the latter as an impenetrable veil of darkness and the former as the bright clarity of the sky. The use of light sources and contrast between value in The Empire of Light contributes to this theme of light and dark, purity and wickedness, or joy and sadness. This interpretation also ... In recent times, congressional elections have not only become increasingly important, but also more expensive. The expense is often considered a result of modern times, however it results in many people being unable to run for a political position. This begs the question of who might be running for a political position if the price wasn t so high, would it be a more common person who relates more to the people. Often incumbents, those currently in office, are able to edge out competitors because of money. The price of elections can also affect issues that are covered by politicians. While its not too hard to fill the requirements for becoming a senator or representative, most people are unable to run for electiondue to the financial burden. In current times this leads to politicians caring less about issues and more on their image, money, and reelection. Christianity was formed by the power of one man, Jesus Christ, whose life was unexplainably different from anyone else s of his time. The influences of his character, beliefs, customs, and teachings, are the foundation of the religion today. The pillars are: the development of a new stadium, the building of a new training facility, and the continual improvement of the club through prudent player acquisitions during the various transfer windows. Adhering to these pillars would allow for continued success in both domestic and European football, as well as the development of the company s assets. Not only is the club historic, but it also possesses 20 million fans worldwide. As a result, in 2008 White Hart Lane sold out every game and there was a 20,000 person waiting list for seating tickets. Post Civil War the U.S. was going through a time where they thought that they were lagging behind other nations in terms of expansionism. Many Americans, like Theodore Roosevelt or Alfred Thayer Mahan, were imperialists who wanted to acquire land/territories for the U.S. The United Statessought to find their identity as a nation in the world. American Identity to imperialists can be defined as patriotism, military power, and dominance/hegemony. This was controversial because some Americans were anti imperialists who did not believe in expansionism, but in defending the Constitution. This brought about both supporters and opponents of imperialismduring the Spanish American War. Manifest Destiny is defined as the 19th century belief that expansion of the U.S. throughout the American continents were both justified and inevitable. • 45. The Right And Bear Arms Christal Blege April 23, 2015 Professor Swint. The right to bear arms? Our second amendment right is something that I feel that most Americans would go to war over. I never grew up around guns, I have never held a gun, or discharged a gun. More importantly, I have never used a gun to protect me, my property or my family. This is why I fail to see the fascination people have with the right to own a gun, especially military grade firearms like assault rifles. Assault rifles were designed to kill people and have no legitimate civilian purpose. (Infobased Learning 2008) So why then is ok for every ordinary Joe over the age of 21 with a permit to own one. Statistically speaking one in every three people in the U.S. own at least one firearm, and of those 48% own four or more firearms. In the past 40 years the percentage of gun ownership has gone from forty seven percent to thirty four percent. But guns do serve other purposes like protection and safety. When having a conversation about gun rights it is clear that it veers towards American standards and values. It comes back to a very basic question, how big of a role should the government have in our everyday lives. We put our faith in our justice system most of the time. So when the highest court in the land gets together and debates and interprets the second amendment to mean that the individual has the right to own guns, we shouldn t debate it. another argument that gun control supporters use is ,with stricter gun ... For the small minority of people that don t experience unhappiness from disregarding human rights, the existence of the police force ensures human right are protected from these members of society. With human rights being protected under law, people rights will be upheld under Utilitarianism because there will always be a larger amount of disutility from violating the law than from the personal gains of a human right offender. The love is between two men, Ennis and Jack and the setting is Wyoming for twenty years from the 1960 s to the 1980 s. This was a time of conservative values that looked at homosexuality in a negative light. These values caused Ennis and Jack to create a life that was what was expected in spite of what they wanted. From this came a great deal of frustration and pain for the two men, their wives, and families. The movie also related to a common issue of today s society and that is the continued discrimination of the LGBT community. There are signs of change in modern society, but also much needed work to be done to allow an individual to live a life with freedom to express their sexuality.
