The issues LGBT people have faced is nothing new in our society, nor is the idea of being an LGBT
individual. It is impossible to date back emotions of people, but general sexuality preference became
a focus around the 1600's. "The practice of governing sexuality reinforced systems of gender, race,
and class dominance" (FIELDER, 2015). Sexuality not only became a part of regular conversation,
but a determining factor of your position in society. If an induvial had a sexual preference other than
heterosexual, they were terrorized. The rights of homosexuals were not respected until 1924 when
the first gay right organization was established, The Society for Human Rights founded by Henry
Gerber. This did not last long. The gay rights movement would not see another organization until the
1950's when the Mattachine Society was established by gay rights activist Harry Hay. Sexuality was
most questioned within middle class homes. The people to come out mainly consisted of white
business men. Though, civil rights of the gay community was being demanded, American women
were still being oppressed so they were not as represented in the gay community until the early
1980's. The acronym "LGBT" was not used until 1988 when activist started to truly include all

In the movie, Jack, Luna Diego, had some serious mental health problems. He was Harvey Milk's
significant other and they loved each other so much. During this time being gay along with having
mental health problems was just a natural disaster waiting to occur just like it explains in article 2,

The 2008 film Milk is based on a true story about a political leader who desired to see a change in
America, specifically the freedom of choice and speech towards homosexuals. The motion picture
takes place after Harvey Milk's 40th birthday and captures the rest of his life as he strives to
convince America to let the gay community out of the closet. The movie portrays the historical
activist very well, including the surrounding characters as well as the actual events that took place

Josh Brolin, the actor who played White, embodied the character in a way that the audience could
understand. During the film, the audience can see that Harvey Milk and George Moscone developed
a political relationship. Shortly after Dan White resigned his seat from the Board of Supervisors,
Milk convinced Mayor Moscone that he would have a greater chance at being reelected mayor
without White on the Board. Mayor George Moscone trusted Milk in this political judgment call.
When the climactic scene of the two assassinations comes, the film depicts it accurately. After
entering San Francisco's City Hall from another entrance to elude the metal detectors, White went to
Moscone's office to plead for his reemployment. When Moscone denied him the occupation, White
shot and killed him. Later in the same hour, White went to Milk's office and killed him as well. The

This film looks at the life of Oscar Grant in the hours leading up to his death. This film takes on
more of the racial issues of today's society as well as the growing divide between residents and
police. This movie was shot in Oakland, California as well as the BART station where Oscar Grant

African–Americans face today. The first thing that I noticed was how the film portrayed the city of
Oakland. In the film Oscar spent most of his time in the ghetto of Oakland, with the only portion of

me being that I am from Oakland as well. While a great deal of Oakland is run–down there are many
nice parts of Oakland that the film left out in which Oscar was apart of. This pushes the stereotype
that African–Americans are "ghetto," or up to no good. This stereotype was even further pushed
when Oscar was blaring Rap music from his car as he was meeting his friend at Bay View (Scene by
the water). While much of the film portrayed Oscar to be a recovering low life, I did find the
director did an amazing job at ensuring that it was noted Oscar was a loving father. I believe the film
does create a bigger divide between residents and police. I will state I have a personal bias in this
case as my Aunt is a mutual friend to the cop involved in the shooting. Yet, while this movie was
great, the film used the highly publicized Trayvon Martin shooting to promote the film. The
Weinstein Co. also set up the "I am __" campaigned aimed at encouraging people to share their
stories of social injustice and how they overcame it. Again, I believe this campaign increased the

Milk. I wanted to analyze a movie that would give me a new perspective, inspire me to think

community and the Castro district of San Francisco through his contributions in politics and stance

political office in United States history.
Harvey Milk was born in Woodmere, New York to a Jewish family. He played football and enjoyed
opera in high school, however he hid his love for opera from his friends (Shilts 1982: 8). Although
he acknowledged himself as a homosexual in high school, he kept it a secret from everyone else. He
attended the New York State College for Teachers in Albany where he majored in Mathematics and
minored in History. Upon graduation, Milk entered the United States Navy serving during the
Korean War. He served the nation for four years and was then discharged from the Navy as a junior
grade lieutenant for suspicion of homosexuality.
