Special thanks to Virginia Commonwealth University for providing us with material which has been adapted for our campus.
Green Zone is an initiative to support military-connected students by designating locations recognized as a “safe place.”
Participants are identified by a Green Zone emblem located outside their office door and/or their syllabus.
This is more than a professional development opportunity; it also is a way to be supportive to those who have sacrificed for others.
The program helps faculty and staff provide supportive services necessary to ensure that military-connected students are successful in their academic pursuits, adjust to the campus environment and eventually transition to civilian employment.
Our goal was to move this from a traditional in person workshop to a self-paced online training.
[Jamie]
Originally began as a in person workshop, similar to our Safe Spaces program for the LGBTG community. Materials were based on a similar program at Virginia Commonwealth University.
The workshop was going to be co-taught with Helena Hill from the Office of Institutional Equity.

Jamie, Helena and I met to discuss moving this to online. Started with the objectives and previous PowerPoint. Built a team:
Jamie and Helena – Subject matter experts
Melissa – Instructional Designer
Alex – Videographer and Content Developer
Broke down the Two modules into even smaller specific content areas. Began outlining the information and transferred content from the PowerPoint slides. and then started an outline on how to present information in chunks, create module objectives and then identify activities for the individuals to complete.
Additional members across campus including a committee with representatives from Housing, Counseling Services.
We started in October and had an original goal of completion by November. However, quality takes time plus this was on top of our normal responsibilities. Actual development time was 5 months. Those who develop an quality online course – this timing was right on par.

My role was to be a guide during the design process. We started with all of the information in the PowerPoint slides and divided the information into modules. We reviewed the PowerPoint slides and then identified the titles of content pages for each of the modules. Then taking the information from the PowerPoints and placing that information into pages.
The modules were divided up between the SME. Then we would meet weekly to discuss a module at a time. We transformed the content in the pages to be more fluid for a reader, included interactive elements – glossary, graphical emotional cycle, terminology flashcards, and quizzes. During each meeting we refined the module – introduced module objectives and video introductions to the modules. All keeping in mind that this would be self-paced. [ Jamie can comment on this process from her perspective]
The course home page provides instructions for individuals to start with Module 1: About the Green Zone Program. After reading this module you must answer a few questions regarding the information provided to move to the next module. We have 7 Modules – and the completion of a quiz at the end of the module unlocks the next module. 7 Modules include: 1. About the Green Zone Program 2. Military Experience 3. Military Affiliated Needs 4. Transition from Base to Campus 5. Considering the Needs of Student Veterans with Disabilities 6. Teaching & Advising 7. Resources
After completing Module 7 participant receives a certification of completion and a sticker. We encourage the participant to display this sticker to show that you support and are willing to assist our military connected campus members.
Another goal during the entire process was to development the content so it could be shared with other institutions.

The Green Zone program is a continuous professional development opportunity. As such, each semester supplemental articles will be added and communicated to past participants. You will have continual access to this training and can review information at anytime.
