    • We use A/n
    • When we don't know or it isn't important which one:
    • eg: He was working in a hardware .
    • With jobs: eg: He is a foreman
    • To talk about a person or thing for the first time:
    • eg: They've got a computer's address book
  • We use The
    • To talk about the same person or thing for the second/third/ fourth time
    • eg: She wrote it in the computer's address book.
    • With superlatives:
    • eg: She's the most beautiful girl in the world
  • Use of the
    • Nouns that are unique: the moon, the Colosseum
    • Before musical instruments: the piano, the saxo
    • Before the names of theatres, cinemas, museums, hotels,newspapers and organization s
  • But sometimes many names of important buildings and institutions are two words, and the first is usually the name of a person or a place. In these cases the article is omitted.
  • The with geographical names
    • Oceans
    • Seas
    • Rivers
    • Groups of islands
    • Mountain ranges
    • Desserts
  • DON'T USE THE ARTICLE
    • To speak in general with plurals and uncountable nouns
    • eg.W omen are more intelligent than men
    • I prefer vodka to gin.
    • Before material and abstract nouns used in a general sense:
    • eg: Gold is a precious metal. Honesty is the best policy.
    • With noun+number
    • eg: 30% of 40, page 23, room 105
    • Our train leaves from Platform 7
    • Don't use the with prison, hospital,school, university,church when you are thinking of the general idea of those places
    • We do not normally use the article with the names of meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner
    • Bed, work, home without article
    • go to bed, be in bed,
    • go to work, be at work, start work, gome home, arrive home, be at home
    • We usually say the radio but television.
    • We heard the news on the radio and the documentaries on television
    • In certain phrases made up of a preposition + noun:
    Examples are: on foot, at school, from top to bottom, at home, in bed, by train, by car, in debt, in hand, on earth, at noon, on board, in jest, at best, at worst etc.
  • We don't use tha article with:
    • Continents,countries,
    • regions,states,provinces,
    • islands, towns and cities.
    • But we use the with Republic, Kingdom, States
    • Roads, streets, parks, shops and restaurants
    • Individual mountains and lakes
