An article is an adjective.Like adjectives,
articles modify nouns.
A, an and the are called articles.
A, an are called indefinite
articles.
The is called definite article.
The is used to refer to specific or
particular nouns.
A / an is used to modify
non-specific or non-
particular nouns.
❖ Before beginning with a consonant sound.
(Eg) a boy, a bird
❖ Before a singular noun beginning
(Eg) a book, a school, a dog.
❖ Even before vowel letters which don’t have vowel sound.
(Eg) a European, a unit, a union.
Some words start with a vowel letter but begin with a consonant
sound, so we use a before these words too.
A university
A one-rupee note
A uniform
❖ Before a word beginning with a vowel
(Eg) an idiot, an apple
❖ Before a word beginning with 'h' but not
sounded
(Eg) an honour, an hour, an honest man
An orange
An umbrella
An eye
❖ Out of the three articles (a, an and the), we have only one
definite article that is ‘The’
❖ It is called definite article because, it shows definiteness.
❖ There are definite rules and situations to use this definite
article. We need to understand these rules to minimize our
errors while speaking or writing English
➢ With things which are unique:
Example: the Internet, The moon, The sun The
stars, The earth, The universe.
➢ Before the superlative degree
Example: the best, the tallest
➢ Before the names of mountains, rivers, oceans, deserts etc.
Example: the Ganges, the Sahara, the Pacific
➢ Before musical instruments
Example: the flute, the violin
➢ Before an adjective to denote a whole class
Example: the old, the rich, the poor
➢ Before the names of holy books
Example: the Bible, the Ramayana, the Quran

For specifying a particular things :-
i.e. I gave him the Red pen.
she gives me the notes of English.
For singular common noun representing whole class:-
i.e. The cow is the four footed animal.
Before adjective of superlative class:-
i.e. Raju is the best boy of his class.
Before greater things :-
i.e. The mount Everest
The shark
Before the word that are intend to be used superlative or equivalent
:-
i.e. He is the leader of today.
Before common noun to give meaning of abstract noun:-
i.e. The judge in him guided to give fare judgement
Before the things which there is only one:-
i.e. The sun, The moon, The Earth
In place of possessive noun:-
i.e. I return him the book.
he gave me the bag.
Before an adjective where noun is understood:-
i.e. The rich should help the poors.
Before an adjective of comparative degree as adverbs:-
i.e. The more you eat the fatter you become.
Before abstract noun for particular things:-
i.e. The beauty of Tajmahal is unbelievable.
Before an adjective to express abstract idea:-
i.e. To follow the right is difficult while to follow the
wrong is easy.
➢ Omission of article
❑ Before the names of relations (father, uncle,sister )
❑ Before the names of material (gold, silver, diamond )
❑ Before proper noun ( Lotus, Chennai, Priya )
❑ Before abstract noun (honesty, wisdom, truth )
❑ Before language ( Tamil, Hindi, English )
❑ Before certain phrases ( at noon, by train, on foot )
