This document discusses assessing cognitive learning in 6 levels: knowledge, comprehension, application, analysis, synthesis, and evaluation. It describes behaviors measured at each level and provides examples of objective and essay test questions that could assess learning at each level. Objective tests include supply, selection, and matching questions. Essay tests are also appropriate to assess cognitive learning when outcomes cannot be fully measured by objective tests alone. Factors to consider when choosing a test type include the learning purpose, time available, and allowing students to demonstrate targeted competencies.
