Teaching Agile So It Sticks Delivering training is easy. But will they remember it next week? And will they still be doing it months from now? Chances are the answer is, “no.” Most corporate training fails at its goal of effecting organizational change, and most training of any kind fails because of something called the Forgetting Curve. Without regular practice at new skills and concepts, people can’t remember what they learned in a class. It’s not their fault—it’s simply a human trait. So how do we facilitate effective learning? How can we support learners with effective courses, skills practice, and learning environments? Richard Kasperowski created and teaches the Agile software development course at Harvard University, and he teaches, coaches, and consults in industry. He shares his experience in designing effective courses and co-creating excellent learning environments. He guides you through a series of fun activities to create your own Agile curriculum and learning modules. You’ll leave understanding how to design effective learning experiences and support your staff as they put their new Agile skills and knowledge into practice. Who should attend? Leaders, coaches, Scrum Masters, trainers, team members, and anyone else who cares about sharing Agile mindset and practices to improve the way their organization works.

Team Transformation Canvas: Team Building Starts with You Want an easy tool to help you start building the best team of your life? That’s exactly what the Team Transformation Canvas is: a practical worksheet to help you and your teammates discover the best in each other and put it into action. For attendees, the canvas facilitates individual self-awareness of their current emotional state and their desired personal outcomes. They develop a deepened understanding of what drives their behaviors and actions. By identifying and owning these intrinsic motivations, participants align their future actions with their most inherent needs—creating their own unique pathway to professional and personal self-actualization. Finally, the canvas facilitates deep emotional and supportive connections with each other—the building blocks of a high-performance team. The canvas can be used as a solitary contemplative exercise for self-improvement, or as a tool for bootstrapping a team toward intentional greatness. Attendees leave with actionable next steps to improve themselves and their teams. And they’ll know how to use the canvas with their own teams, to help other individuals and teams gain deeper insight into themselves so they can pursue their greatness. For those familiar with the Core Protocols, the canvas facilitates a super-fast individual and team boot-up.

High-performance teams are masters of mindfulness. The individual team members have high self-awareness. They know who they are, how they feel, and what they want. They always know the right thing to do or say at the right moment. They are aware of the impact of everything they do or say to each other. Teams in this state have high group awareness—as a team they know who they are, how they feel, and what they want together. Some teams get into this state by accident, and others are intentional and get there on purpose. To get into this state of mindfulness and high performance on purpose, Richard incorporates elements of the work of Jim and Michele McCarthy and the Core Protocols, Woody Zuill and Mob Programming, contemporary meditation teachers, and his own work with meditation and Core Protocols. In this session, we practice ways to get into a state of group mindfulness, including Core Protocols such as emotional check in, personal alignment, investigate, and group alignment. We also practice some short guided meditations. Attendees leave with embodied knowledge of activities to bring more mindfulness to their work teams.

We're excited and proud to present Richard Kasperowski and this special meetup on high performing teams using the core protocols. At AWA we use the core protocols because we truly believe in their positive impact on performance and emotional intelligence, and that this positivity will trickle out to benefit people’s personal lives. Your team can be ten times better. What does that mean? That means your professional team can accomplish 10x more work, do it with 10x more quality, 10x faster, or with 10x fewer resources. Your family can be 10x happier. Your school can be 10x more effective at helping people learn. Your community group can be 10x better at making life better for the people it serves. Even you yourself can be 10x more effective at getting what you want. In other words, you can be great. Your team can be great. Greatness Can you say these things about your teams? - My projects are completed effortlessly on schedule and within budget every time. - Every team I’ve ever been on has shared a vision. - In meetings, we only ever do what will get results. - No one blames “management” or anyone else if they don’t get what they want. - Everybody shares their best ideas right away. - Ideas are immediately unanimously approved, improved, or rejected by the team. - Action on approved ideas begins immediately. - Conflict is always resolved swiftly and productively. The Core Protocols are one way to make teams that have these characteristics. Some of the things you’ll learn: - Results-oriented behaviors - How to enter a state of shared vision with a team and stay there - How to create trust on a team - How to stay rational and healthy - How to make team decisions effectively - How to move quickly and with high quality towards the team’s goals ABOUT THIS SESSION: This session is taken from Richard's 1-day course of the same name that we're running in NYC this January 2019. https://kspr.co/newyork

Poster to be presented at Stochastic Numerics and Statistical Learning: Theory and Applications Workshop 2024, Kaust, Saudi Arabia, https://cemse.kaust.edu.sa/stochnum/events/event/snsl-workshop-2024. In this work we have considered a setting that mimics the Henry problem \cite{Simpson2003,Simpson04_Henry}, modeling seawater intrusion into a 2D coastal aquifer. The pure water recharge from the ``land side'' resists the salinisation of the aquifer due to the influx of saline water through the ``sea side'', thereby achieving some equilibrium in the salt concentration. In our setting, following \cite{GRILLO2010}, we consider a fracture on the sea side that significantly increases the permeability of the porous medium. The flow and transport essentially depend on the geological parameters of the porous medium, including the fracture. We investigated the effects of various uncertainties on saltwater intrusion. We assumed uncertainties in the fracture width, the porosity of the bulk medium, its permeability and the pure water recharge from the land side. The porosity and permeability were modeled by random fields, the recharge by a random but periodic intensity and the thickness by a random variable. We calculated the mean and variance of the salt mass fraction, which is also uncertain. The main question we investigated in this work was how well the MLMC method can be used to compute statistics of different QoIs. We found that the answer depends on the choice of the QoI. First, not every QoI requires a hierarchy of meshes and MLMC. Second, MLMC requires stable convergence rates for $\EXP{g_{\ell} - g_{\ell-1}}$ and $\Var{g_{\ell} - g_{\ell-1}}$. These rates should be independent of $\ell$. If these convergence rates vary for different $\ell$, then it will be hard to estimate $L$ and $m_{\ell}$, and MLMC will either not work or be suboptimal. We were not able to get stable convergence rates for all levels $\ell=1,\ldots,5$ when the QoI was an integral as in \eqref{eq:integral_box}. We found that for $\ell=1,\ldots 4$ and $\ell=5$ the rate $\alpha$ was different. Further investigation is needed to find the reason for this. Another difficulty is the dependence on time, i.e. the number of levels $L$ and the number of sums $m_{\ell}$ depend on $t$. At the beginning the variability is small, then it increases, and after the process of mixing salt and fresh water has stopped, the variance decreases again. The number of random samples required at each level was estimated by calculating the decay of the variances and the computational cost for each level. These estimates depend on the minimisation function in the MLMC algorithm. To achieve the efficiency of the MLMC approach presented in this work, it is essential that the complexity of the numerical solution of each random realisation is proportional to the number of grid vertices on the grid levels.
