Module 3 - Background PRINCIPLES OF MARKETING All readings are required unless noted as “Optional” or “Not Required.” Introduction In practice, Marketers use various models to describe the different marketing functions. Some of the more popular models are the 7 step model, STP (segmentation, targeting, positioning), or the 4 C's (Consumer Behavior, Company Analysis, Competitor Analysis, and Context). Each has advantages and drawbacks regarding comprehensiveness. Readings describing each of these models are provided in the Optional Reading list at the end of this section. For this module, however, we will use a model that integrates and abridges these other models. Consumers, Markets, and Competition Though many people think of marketing as consisting of sales and advertising, one of the most important marketing functions begins even before the final product or service has been developed. In this early stage, the organization conducts research to determine customer needs, how the market is structured, and the number and nature of competitors addressing that need. As you will see below, these three topics are intertwined. Consumers The purpose of marketing is to discover how to provide value to consumers while earning a profit. Marketers must understand the entire consumer base: the customer served by the organization, the customer currently served by competitors, and customers who may be served in the future. One way marketers do this is by analyzing buyer behavior (i.e., how consumers get information and how consumers make buying decisions). Consumer behaviors are influenced by a number of considerations such as psychological factors, convenience, competing choices, and cultural preferences. Read the following book chapter on consumer behavior. Tanner, J., and Raymond, M. (2012). Marketing Principles (v. 2.0). Ch. 3: Consumer behavior: How people make buying decisions. Sections 3.1-3.6. Retrieved from https://2012books.lardbucket.org/pdfs/marketing-principles-v2.0.pdf Markets Any business needs to know the characteristics of the markets in which the firm operates. Understanding the customer and the market requires extensive and sophisticated research efforts to gather and analyze social and economic trends, human decision-making, and potential competitors. The goal of market research is to enable the firm to identify opportunities and threats in the business environment as well as the organization’s capacity to exploit its strengths and shore up its weaknesses. Market research can be either primary (collected directly from the source), or secondary (collected/published by someone outside the organization). Some examples of secondary data include: · US Census · www.Data,gov · Internal data (such as customer cards at grocery stores that collect data on buying patterns) · Nielsen or Arbitron ratings · Published articles and reports · Blog posts · Social media The following chart illustrates the differences between primary and secondary market re ...

FREE MANAGEMENT CONSULTING COURSE on www.oeconsulting.be Operational Excellence Consulting What is Strategy Management ? Strategy is to prepare systematically plans for the future in order to interact to new emerging trends and changes in the wider scope of the company with special attention to avoid rigidity, because the past is not equal to the future. “Wide scope of the company” : Companies are open systems : input side for resource seeking and output side for market seeking (system dynamics!) “Avoid rigidity” : New events, new knowledge makes that the original strategy is no longer up to date In general, strategy arises incrementally: “What are realistic objectives with current characteristics of the context and future trends?” Predictability is key for making strategic plans and investment decisions in the long run. Planning, with hard data and soft data (tacit knowledge), is easier in stable environment. However in the long run a small change in wide scope of the company could escalate dramatically due to system dynamics. Besides predictability, there is also legacy: most big companies have legacy to carry on while small companies (e.g. Fintech) start from a clean sheet and are flexible, focused, motivated and can “do more with less”. For building and accumulating a “strategic competitive advantage (SCA)” a consistent flow of investment is needed in order to obtain desired level of accumulation. A “strategic competitive advantage (SCA)” can be a patent (intellectual property), a customer install base, a certain image or branding in the mind of the customers, a new disruptive or innovative technology, … and is the result of a strategic decision in investing a consistent flow and stock. Stock – flow diagram : “Success breeds success” For example: (1) a consistent investment in R&D will give a bigger stock of knowledge/competence than the double investment in half of the time. So speeding up the investments will not give the same stock at a certain moment. (2) a consistent investment in advertising will give a bigger stock of reputation/image/branding than the double investment in half of the time.

INDUSTRY ANALYSIS One of the major competences that strategic managers need is the ability to define their business, conduct an effective industry analysis, and identify the "key success factors" for firms competing in their industry. This brief note discusses the steps most often found in a solid analysis of an industry. A.DEFINE THE INDUSTRY. The boundaries for an industry analysis are determined by the markets and products that best describe the domain of the industry. Once you fully understand the business segment that is to be analyzed, you are in a position to identify the capabilities required to participate successfully in that industry, and the competitors that are likewise able to effectively target the same business segments. These elements set the parameters for understanding and analyzing the industry. As industries converge and shift, business definitions become more difficult. In virtually all industries, consumers are becoming more demanding for customized products and services. These demands encourage the development of innovations, products, and competitors. B. DESCRIBE THE INDUSTRY STRUCTURE. For each product-market segment, an industry analysis will describe the "five-forces" of competition. The five forces discussed briefly below predict the long run profitability of an industry and are an important first step in analyzing the industry once it has been identified. 1. Bargaining Power of Buyers: This primary force comes from the customer segments that make up the markets in which firms compete. The size and importance of customers influences their power to negotiate prices and terms that reduce the overall profitability of the industry. The sizes and types of buyers present in an industry determine their potential influence on product development and influence the level of competition to be found in the industry. 2. Intensity of Rivalry: A second force comes from the competitors and the ways they compete. Each competitor offers a set of products and services that attempts to provide higher value to the product-market segments they address. Strategies can be designed to provide combinations of higher performance, more fashion and features, higher quality, or lower price. Increased rivalry always leads to price or service competition that reduces the profitability of the industry. 3. Bargaining Power of Suppliers: A third influence on the profitability of an industry comes from its suppliers. In some industries, suppliers might control critical inputs that can affect all firms’ ability to compete. Analogous to Bargaining power of Buyers, whenever suppliers are large or few, their leverage tends to be high. Limited access to critical factors of production, equipment, materials, or components can increase prices and accordingly limit profit potential. 4. Threat of New Entrants; a fourth force represents the ease with which a new competitor can compete for exi ...
