Called the power house because it converts the unusable energy of glucose (like coal) into the usable energy in ATP (like electricity). Glucose catabolism was studied in Chapter 8.
Intermediate filaments are like ropes of 8 very fine fibers. Composition varies. Microfilaments are a twisted double strand of the protein actin. They’re involved in muscle contraction, cyclosis, and changes in cell shape. Microtubles consist of pairs of tubulin subunits wound around in a spiral to form a tube. Involved in cell division and movement of cilia and flagella.
Either used to move very small organisms around in their environment, or move the liquid environment past the organism. Microtubules shrink and stretch in patterns that cause bending and flexing of appendage.
