We are all social creatures

• Social Relationships: “We Can't Do Without
  Them."
Is Facebook is just a social site or
does it have educational benefits?
“knowledge is not gained as an individual
experience, but more so from collaborative social
discussion about shared problems or risk”.

(Merriam, Caffarella & Baumgarter (2007, p.291), the “Social Constructivists
View”)
The Human Factor: The Connection Between
          Social Networking and Learning

• “The researchers found that student
participation in an online social network may,
in and of itself, lead to positive learning
outcomes that could support the goals of
retention and engagement in a university
  setting.”

Mary Arnold; Instructional Technologist http://elearningauthor.blogspot.com/

Benefits of Social Networking Services (SNS)

Major findings – significant benefits associated with use SNS including
• Delivering Educational Outcomes
• Facilitating Supportive Relationships
• Fosters strong sense of community and belonging
• Helps to successfully adapt to change and stressful
  events.
• Promotes internet and media literacy
• 2011 - Research Conducted by UWS, Murdoch Uni & Inspire Foundation (Cooperative
Research Centre for Young People, Technology and Wellbeing, bringing together 63 partners in an enviable mix of world class youth researchers
across 13 universities, innovative thinkers from industry and business, and mental health and youth advocates across the nongovernment and government
sector.) http://ow.ly/8Kx2n

                           YAW-CRC Research, 63 partners across 13 universities
Examining Social Presence in Online Courses in Relation to
       Students' Perceived Learning and Satisfaction

• Research has demonstrated that social presence not
only affects outcomes but also student, and possibly
instructor, satisfaction with a course. Teacher
immediacy behaviors and the presence of others are
especially important issues for those involved in
  delivering online education.

Editor's Notes

  1. good learning is inherently a social activity, people learn about content as they interact with other people. We need to design online learning around this. Respected Educational researcher Michael Moore in 1989 said that there are 3 types of interaction that need to exist to have an effective online user experience. learner >< learner, is learner >< Teacher, and learner >< content? If we looked at a Pie Chart, most organisations would have a large percentage in the Content range. Facebook can give the learner the Learner to Learner interaction and also increase the Learner to Teacher/Expert interaction.
  2.  Open University is a world leader in modern distance learning
  3. So Why should we engage our students on Facebook?Community (distance isolated)studentsEngage with other students and teachers in THEIR space as they do in their daily livesFlexible – on Mobile (accessible anywhere)Collaborative – UGC (User generated content) Informal learningOur students are ALREADY there, they don’t have to be forced into other platforms.
  4. This is because students engage with a community of students studying the same course, have a more personal experience with their teachers and are no longer isolated.
  5. Point on News Feed (pages) & Notification (groups) Group posts don’t go to your newsfeed. Instead, you get a ‘notification’ that someone has posted in the group. This can be both good and bad – it’s good because people definitely won’t miss it, no matter how long after you post the content they log onto facebook. HOWEVER, sometimes when there is too much posting going on it just gets so annoying a lot of people choose to change their notification settings so that they don’t receive these anymore. As the posts aren’t fed to your Facebook newsfeed, you effectively forget about the group forever because there is nothing prompting you to visit.Groups are much more like a virtual classroom, whereas pages are like your public face. Each has a different purpose, depending on your purpose you can chose either one, or you may use both. We have found that groups are great for students starting courses and targeting specific units or groups of units.
  6. Show the page
  7. ACTION: OPEN UP OTEN PROFILE AND SHOW SOME GROUPS
