2. The Overcoming Hurdles in Ohio Youth Advisory Board
is a statewide organization of young people, ages 14-24,
who have experienced foster care.
The OHIO YAB exists to be the knowledgeable statewide
voice that influences policies and practices that impact youth
who have or will experience out of home care.
Lisa: May is not only Foster Care Month, but it is graduation month for many young people as well. Therefore, we’ve experienced some attrition when it comes to this panel. Two young men just started their summer jobs and had to work, for example. We have three youth speakers who have taken time to prepare and to speak on behalf of themselves and others. I’ll let each of them share their name and what county they are from.
Lisa: When I asked youth to describe what they wanted most from their CASA or GAL, it was to earn their trust and learn their story.
Lisa: Explains blindfold activity and how it illustrates lack of youth voice in court.
Lisa: CASAs and GALs can play a vital role in making sure siblings stay connected.
Lisa: Shares the marker story. If GALs and CASAs listen to youth voices, permanency will come more quickly. All three young people are in great foster homes now.
Lisa explains what the “Every Student Succeeds Act” is
Lisa: The Fostering Connections to Success Act maps out requirements regarding essential elements to be covered in the development of a 90-day transition plan that is that is personalized at the direction of the young person, includes specific options on housing, health insurance, education, mentoring, support services, workforce and employment services, and is as detailed as the youth may elect.”
Lisa: Both federal law and Ohio Administrative Code require that prior to the youth’s emancipated from foster care, they need to receive ORIGINALS (not copies) of these three documents.
Lisa: Youth Rights Handbook – make them aware of it
